Four simple practices we can begin right now:

• Mindfulness of the breath ; to anchor attention in the present moment
• Awareness of the body ; to reconnect with sensation and reality as it is
• Observation of thoughts ; to see the mind without being ruled by it
• Ethical restraint ; to reduce inner conflict and create clarity

Nothing fancy, plain & effective.
Just steady attention, again and again.

We often blame ourselves for a lack of discipline.
But the truth is simpler and kinder.

Human beings are wired to seek comfort, dopamine, and energy efficiency.

The brain evolved to conserve energy, not to chase long-term goals. From a biological perspective, choosing rest over effort is not laziness—it’s efficiency (Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow).

That’s why motivation is unreliable. It fluctuates with mood, sleep, hormones, and circumstances.
But systems are steady.

As James Clear paraphrases it so clearly:
“You don’t rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

If discipline feels hard, it’s not a character flaw; it’s a systems problem.

Here are 5 simple anchors to keep discipline sustainable in the new year, without fighting your own nature: (in the pic slides.)

The New Year doesn’t need stronger motivation.
It needs clear systems.
Systems that respect biology.
Systems that align with consciousness.
Systems that make discipline a natural consequence, not a daily battle.

Because real discipline isn’t force.
It’s structure that supports awareness.

Ashtanga yoga (8 limbs of Yoga) is a complete systematic path to achieve samāpatti ( total absorption) where the layer between the knower, the known and the act of knowing dissolve.

The system ( practice ) move from action to awareness ( the outer to the inner)

The first two limbs (Yama and Niyama) are about mastery over our actions, choices, and how we live in the world.

Without this foundation, the rest cannot truly unfold.

The third limb, Āsana, refines our relationship with the body.

The fourth, Prāṇāyāma, brings awareness and regulation of the breath.

The fifth, Pratyāhāra, is the turning inward; learning to withdraw the 5 senses.

***From here, the practice becomes subtle.

Dhāraṇā is mastery of focus.

When focus becomes steady, it naturally matures into Dhyāna, meditation.

Yoga is not a technique to skip steps.
Without the first two limbs, the rest remain unstable.

eka-gratā (एकाग्रता), meaning one-pointedness of mind or single-directed focus (on object , on breath ,on sensation and so on…..)

it is a simple, accessible practice (how to- staying with one object and gently returning to it again and again.) The practice is achieved by returning to focus , not controlling nor forcing. It demands repetition rather than ambition..

Over time, the mind steadies, and clarity comes.

Inspired by my teacher Talia, I’ve learned the value of going straight to the source.

Learning from original sources in yoga is important because it keeps the practice rooted in its true intention. It didn’t begin as a trend; it came from deep traditions: the Vedas, Upaniṣads, Yoga Sūtras, Bhagavad Gītā, and the Buddhist and Jain teachings.

When we stay close to these sources, the practice becomes clearer. We understand why we move, breathe, meditate, and where the path is leading.

Without the sources, yoga can get diluted. With them, the practice stays honest, meaningful, and steady. It becomes more than technique.., it becomes understanding.

Yoga is both practice and goal .

Yoga as a practice.

Yoga is a practice, a discipline, and a tool to transform the mind and body.

In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra (2.28):
“By the practice of the limbs of yoga, the impurities are destroyed and the light of knowledge arises, leading to discernment.”

Yoga as a goal

The ultimate goal of yoga is union ; the state of oneness between individual consciousness and universal consciousness.

It’s the state of Samadhi ; complete absorption, peace, and liberation (kaivalya).

Also in Yoga Sutra (1.2):
“Yogaḥ citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ” — Yoga is the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind.
When the mind is still, one absorb in their true Self. That state itself is yoga ,the goal.

So, as a goal, yoga is the state of being that arises when the practice has done its work ; when there is no longer separation between “the one who practices” and “the practice itself.”

Sometimes all we need is a different perspective ; a shift in how we see things, not necessarily a change in what’s happening. In yoga philosophy, this is “pratipaksha bhavana” the practice of cultivating an opposite or higher thought when the mind is clouded by negativity or confusion.

When we learn to step back and observe through awareness rather than reaction, we realize that the same situation can look entirely different depending on where we stand. Just like changing your drishti (gaze) in an asana can transform your balance, changing your mental gaze can transform your experience.

That simple shift in perspective can open the way to clarity, compassion, and freedom.
