COLON HYDROTHERAPY
🔹 Constipation causes striking changes in f***l flora, intestinal permeability and systemic immune response. Probiotic concentrations are significantly lower in constipated patients; potentially pathogenic bacteria and/or fungi are increased and lymphocytes proliferation is decreased [A]
🔹 Intestinal dysbiosis is a common event in patients in intensive care units, and it plays a role in septic complications [B]
🔹 Colon hydrotherapy is safe and can improve abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea associated with irritable bowel syndrome. [C]
🔹 Colonic hydrotherapy is an undervalued but effective alternative treatment for intractable defecation disorders, and could improve quality of life scores. [D]
🔹 Following a single colon hydrotherapy session, the patient may better handle the administration of fiber, symbiotics and/or macrogol products which previously had caused abdominal discomfort and were thus taken only sporadically. [E]
🔹 It is speculated that colon hydrotherapy can actually ‘‘free up’’ the large intestine, releasing f***l residues that were present for some time, stuck to the intestinal walls, obstructing transport, causing irritation and colon dysfunction. Recent observations definitely support this idea that water use may induce improvements in symptoms without any effects on the intestinal microbiota. [F].
🔹 The colon hydrotherapy is an effective, efficient, and well-tolerated method for bowel cleansing, demonstrating a low incidence of adverse events. It is recommended as an effective and safe remedial therapy for patients with inadequate bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy. [G]
🔹 In a survey of 1939 Thai colon hydrotherapy patients, 78% of patients felt better after colon hydrotherapy. The better feelings were described as easy defecation, improvement of dyspeptic symptom, increased appetite, and improved skin texture. [H]
