พระพุทธชินราชสร้างโดยพระมหาธรรมราชาที่ 1 (พญาลิไท) กษัตริย์ลำดับที่ 5 แห่งกรุงสุโขทัย ซึ่งในตำนานพระพุทธชินราชฯ เรียกพระเจ้าศรีธรรมไตรปิฎก โดยสร้างพระพุทธรูปพร้อมกัน 3 องค์ เพื่อประดิษฐานในพระวิหารทิศ ของวันพระศรีรัตนมหาธาตุเมื่อพิษณุโลกเมื่อ พ.ศ. 1900 ในตำนานพระพุทะชินราชฯ มีชื่อช่างหล่อพระพุทธชินราชเป็นช่างพราหมณ์ฝีมือดี 5 นาย คือ บาอินท์ 1 บาพรหม 1 บาพิษณุ 1 บาราชสังข์ 1 บาราชกุศล 1

ไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานแน่ชัดว่าสร้างในปีใด แต่มีการสันนิษฐานโดยอ้างอิงตามพงศาวดารเหนือ คาดว่าน่าจะสร้างพร้อมกับพระพุทธชินสีห์และพระศรีศาสดา ในรัชสมัย พระมหาธรรมราชาที่ 1 (ลิไท) จากนั้นจึงมีการลงรักปิดทององค์พระเป็นครั้งแรกในสมัยสมเด็จพระเอกาทศรถ ในสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา และได้มีการบูรณะ ลงรักปิดทองอีกครั้งในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 และมีการบูรณะครั้งล่าสุดในรัชกาลที่ 9 พระพุทธชินราชนี้เป็นพระพุทธรูปศิลปะสมัยสุโขทัย หมวดพระพุทธชินราช ลักษณะขององค์พระเส้นรอบนอกพระวรกายอ่อนช้อย พระขโนงโก่ง พระเนตรประดุจตากวาง พระนาสิกโด่ง ชายผ้าสังฆาฏิแยกเป็นเขี้ยวตะขาบ นิ้วพระหัตถ์ทั้ง 4 ยาวเสมอกัน อยู่ในลักษณะปางมารวิชัย ด้านซ้ายและขวาขององค์พระมียักษ์ 2 ตน คอยปกปักรักษาองค์พระอยู่ อีกทั้งยังมีพระโมคคัลลานะและพระสารีบุตรเป็นอัครสาวกอยู่ด้วย นอกจากนี้แล้วยังมีซุ้มเรือนแก้วที่คาดว่าน่าจะสร้างในสมัยอยุธยาลักษณะเป็นรูปตัวเหรา ถือเป็นศิลปะที่สวยงามมากอย่าหนึ่ง พระพุทธชินราชประดิษฐานในวิหารลักษณะเก้าห้อง ซึ่งมีการบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์มาอย่างต่อเนื่องจนมาถึงปัจจุบัน ทำให้องค์พระสวยงามบริบูรณ์อย่างในปัจจุบัน และในประวัติศาสตร์ยังพบว่ากษัตริย์ในทุกๆสมัยของไทยให้ความเคารพและศรัทธาต่อองค์พระพุทธชินราชมาอย่างต่อเนื่องทุกๆ พระองค์
