เราดูคนที่เรียนมาก
การศึกษามาก วิทยาศาสตร์มาก
เข้ากับใครไม่ได้เลย
ไปเข้ากับหมากับแมว
หลวงพ่อมองออกหมดน่ะ

ถ้าว่าใจบุญ
ทำไมกินสเต็กเนื้อก้อนใหญ่เหลือเกินน่ะ
ทำไมไม่กินมังสวิรัติเหมือนคนอินเดียเค้า
เห็นด้วยมั้ย
ช่างหัวมันภายนอก
ช่างหัวมัน ช่างพ่อ ช่างแม่มัน
เราก็เน้นมาที่ตัวเรานี่แหละ

Take, for example,
those who are highly
educated or science-savvy
They find it difficult to interact
with any humans
So, they (withdraw
from human interactions
and turn to cats
and dogs for companionship
Luang Por can
see right through that

If we were to call that (raising cats and dogs) kindness
Why are they still eating big chunks of steak
Why aren’t they vegetarian like most Indian people?
Do you agree?
Anyhow, let it be
Regardless of what it is, let it be
We shall focus (the practice) on ourselves
Cultivate a sense of joy (in practice) until we are so happy that we exclaim with joy “Wow Wow Wow”
This is how we shall practice, do you agree?

ตัวตนมันมีปมด้อยน่ะ
มันไม่มีอะไรที่จะเป็นปมเด่น เลยใช้วิธีอย่างนี้
ถ้าบอกเพราะความหลงมันมีเยอะ เห็นด้วยมั้ย

ตัวตนน่ะ มันก็ขี้เกียจขี้คร้านน่ะ
ตัวตนไม่มีศีล ไม่มีสมาธิ ไม่มีปัญญา
มันเลยหาทางออกด้วยวิธีอย่างนี้

ทำตัวเป็นคนชอบความสงบ…ไม่ใช่
คนมีปมด้อยน่ะ
ไปอยู่กับใครก็ทะเลาะกับคนนั้น

หลวงพ่อเลยบอกพระ เอ้ย พระปมด้อยนะ
ไปอยู่กับป่าเขาก็ไปทะเลาะกับแม้วพวกกะเหรี่ยง
ไม่ทะเลาะกับหมากับแมวเท่านั้นแหละ
เพราะว่าหมาแมวมันไม่เถียง

Attachment to self is
a sign of inferiority complex
People who lack any other
superior quality resort to
it as a means of escape
If Luang Por says that it is
because the mind is greatly
deluded, would you agree?

Attachment to self is
also a sign of laziness
Peoples who lack morality,
concentration and wisdom
Resort to it as a means
of escape, just like this

Some pretend to value calmness,
but in reality, they do not
They only have inferiority complex,
As wherever they go,
they have conflicts
with everyone they meet

Thus, Luang Por directly teaches
the monks that “monks,
you are inferiority complex monks,
Dwelling in the mountains,
you find the way to have conflicts
with the Hmong and the Karen
(ethnic hill tribes residing along
the borders of Thailand and Myanmar)
The only beings that
you do not have conflicts
with are cats and dogs,
As they can not argue back

who have come to cultivate
an atmosphere of deep faith,
engage in Dhamma learning,
nurture peace of mind,
and accumulate wholesome

การปฏิบัติพวกเราต้องทำในปัจจุบัน
เพราะอดีตอนาคตเราก็ทำไม่ได้
ต้องเฉพาะในปัจจุบันเท่านั้น
ปัจจุบันเราเอาความฉลาด
กับความดีมารวมกันเป็นอันหนึ่งอันเดียวกัน
มาประพฤติปฏิบัติทั้งสามอย่างนี้
ก็จะเป็น ศีล สมาธิ ปัญญา อย่างสมบูรณ์
ทุกคนต้องทิ้งอดีตออกจากใจ

We should all practise selflessness
in the present moment.
Do not be depressed about
the physical body, birth, old age,
sickness and death.
They are just messengers that
manifest to remind us that
our bodies do not belong to us.
Train the mind to realise the truth
about the way things are so that
it is not fooled by sickness,
physical pain or anything else that
happens in life. Even though
the body will get sick,
it is important to prevent
the mind from getting sick too.
One can achieve this by way of
Anapanasati; breathing in feeling
at ease/ breathing out feeling at ease.

“เตสังสังขารานัง เตสังวูปสโม สุโข” หมายความว่า “ความเข้าไปสงบระงับสังขารก็คือ การปรุงแต่งเหล่านั้นคือความคิดเหล่านั้น จึงเป็นความสุขอย่างยิ่ง” หายใจเข้าหายใจออกให้สบายที่สุดในโลก เพื่อเป็นฐานของสมาธิ ใจเราจะได้หลุดพ้นด้วยเจโตวิมุตติ ใจเราจะได้หลุดพ้นด้วยปัญญาอันเป็นปัญญาวิมุตติ จะได้รู้แจ้งเห็นจริงว่า ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างมันไม่ใช่ตัวไม่ใช่ตน มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงตลอดเวลา บังคับบัญชาอะไรก็ไม่ได้ ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างนี้ไม่ควรจะเอามาเผาตัวเอง คนเราถ้าอารมณ์มันค้างอยู่แสดงว่ายังไม่เสียสละ ไม่ได้เป็นปัจจุบันธรรม ใจไม่ได้เป็นธรรม ดังนั้นเลยกลายเป็นปัจจุบันแห่งความหลง เพราะยังเต็มไปด้วยความยึดมั่นถือมั่นในอดีต หลงอยู่ในอัตตาตัวตน

ให้ทุกคนมีความสุขในการหายใจเข้า มีความสุขในการหายใจออก อย่างนี้แล้วทุกคนต้องมีความสุขในการทำงาน งานที่เป็นสัมมาอาชีวะ คืองานที่ไม่ผิดศีล งานที่ไม่เบียดเบียนทำร้ายผู้อื่นสัตว์อื่น เรียกว่า สัมมาอาชีวะ งานที่ไม่เบียดเบียนคนอื่น เช่น อาชีพที่ไม่เบียดเบียน อาชีพที่ไม่ฆ่าสัตว์ตัดชีวิต การค้าขายมนุษย์ การค้าขายยาพิษ การค้าขายอาวุธ ค้าขายสัตว์ ค้าขายน้ำเมายาเสพติด มันเป็นสิ่งที่พระพุทธเจ้าบอกว่า เป็นอาชีพที่เบียดเบียนคนอื่น เป็นมิจฉาอาชีวะ แม้กระทั่งการพนันบ่อนคาสิโนทั้งหลายที่มอมเมาปัญญาของคนก็เป็นมิจฉาอาชีวะ เวลาจะทำอะไรจะค้าขายอะไรก็ไม่เอากำไรเกินควร หนีภาษีอากร ฉ้อราษฎร์บังหลวง คอรัปชั่นกินสินบาทคาดสินบน กินบ้านกินเมือง ลักษณะเช่นนี้คือไม่ใช่สัมมาอาชีวะ แต่เป็นมิจฉาอาชีวะ

Mental formations lead to suffering. One should practise based on the Buddha’s teaching, that says…
“Tesam sankharanang Tesam vupa samo sukho”
meaning “eradication of mental formations or past sensations is the ultimate joy”.

Use “breathing in feeling at ease/ breathing out feeling at ease” as a basis for meditation so that one can eventually attain Nibbana with Ceto Vimutti (deliverance of mind) and Panna Vimutti (deliverance through wisdom), that is, realising that all things are impermanent, ever-changing, not self, and thus cannot be controlled. Therefore, why torment the mind with past sensations? If one lets the mind dwell on past sensations, then the mind will be attached to the past, the sense of self and cannot be Dhammic, selfless or in the present moment.

One should be joyful, with mindfulness of breathing and right livelihood, earning a living without harming oneself or others. The Buddha named five types of businesses that lay people should not engage in: dealing in weapons, trade of human beings, meat production or butchery, selling intoxicants, or dealing with poison. Primarily, the Buddha’s teachings were to avoid all types of wrong livelihood including work related to gambling, profiteering, tax evasion or any kind of corruption.

We all should work with joy, that is, work diligently avoiding laziness and selfishness. In addition, let your work be practice, making work and practise one and the same. As all of us spend more time awake than asleep, it is very important to work and practise joyfully. To be successful professionally and personally, we can follow the Chinese teaching that says, “work hard, be frugal, honest and grateful”. When one can practise selflessness with joy, one is considered to have developed mindfulness and clear comprehension (Sati-sampajanna) and right livelihood can evolve into right mindfulness. By walking this path, not only will one advance professionally, but one will be cultivating virtue at the same time.

Wat Pa Thammaphanamwan, Wat Pa Khao Samrit
Wat Huai Phukaew, Wat Pa Wangphuthong
Wat Suan Pa Siritharo, and Acharayakhun Hermitage
joined together with Thai
and international devotees
to take part in chanting
with Luang Por Kanha during
the Rains Retreat, and to listen to
his Dhamma discourse
on this meaningful occasion
of Buddhist Lent (Vassa).
