Eye itching may seem like a minor annoyance, but it can be an important indicator of your eye health.

The most common causes include:
• Allergies: Pollen, dust, or pet dander can cause itching and watery eyes.
• Dry eyes: Prolonged screen time or insufficient eye moisture can lead to itching and stinging sensations.
• Infections: Eye infections such as conjunctivitis can cause redness and itching.

Although rubbing your eyes may seem tempting, it can worsen the condition. İnstead:
• Keep your eyes clean and moist
• Use artificial tears if necessary
• And especially in cases of persistent or severe itching, consult an eye doctor

Cataract is a disease that occurs when the lens in our eye loses its structure and properties over time.
Normally, the lens in our eye is also called the crystalline lens. It has a glass-like structure. Like eyeglass lenses or the contact lenses we use, it has the ability to transmit all of the light from front to back.

However, over time—most often due to aging—the protein structures inside the lens begin to change. This situation, of course, reduces light transmission. As light transmission decreases, patients begin to see more dimly and with increased blurring.

Especially because blue light is filtered, colors begin to appear more yellow. In addition, the deposits inside the lens cause light to scatter and disperse, and after a while this begins to affect the patient’s daily functions.

When we evaluate the patient during the examination, if there is a level of visual acuity that interferes with daily activities, or if the patient is very disturbed by this light scattering and this color loss, we begin to recommend surgery.
After the surgery, the new lenses we implant transmit all of the light to the back of the eye, to the retinal tissue, just like our natural lens, and as a result, patients begin to see clearly and brightly again.

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that damages the optic nerve due to increased intraocular pressure.
Eyes affected by glaucoma usually do not show symptoms, and in the early stages, peripheral vision loss progresses slowly, so many people do not notice it. For this reason, glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight.”
Compared to a healthy eye:
• A glaucoma-affected eye can lead to narrowed visual fields and light sensitivity
• If left untreated, there is a risk of permanent vision loss
• With regular monitoring and appropriate treatment, glaucoma can be controlled effectively

Now I will talk about some clues that make a person think they may have cataracts.
A cataract is the clouding of the lens inside the eye. Therefore, the first symptom is seeing the surroundings as blurry.
Another clue is that the glasses a person has previously used no longer provide sufficient benefit.
In addition, elderly individuals who used to be able to read with reading glasses may, in some types of cataracts, start to read up close without glasses for a period of time. However, after some time passes, near vision deteriorates again.
These are some of the most common early signs of cataracts.

Glaucoma, commonly known as “eye pressure,” can progress for years without showing any symptoms. The damage caused to the optic nerve during this period is irreversible. Measuring eye pressure alone is not sufficient to rule out glaucoma. Visual field tests, optic nerve analyses, and regular follow-ups are essential.

One of the most common questions after excimer laser surgery is when vision will fully stabilize.
It is normal to experience blurriness, fluctuating vision, or mild stinging in the first few hours after the procedure. This is a natural part of the eye’s healing process.
For most patients, vision noticeably improves within the first few days; however, the final clarity can vary from person to person.
The recovery period depends on several factors:
• The laser technique used
• The rate at which the corneal surface heals
• Postoperative eye drop regimen
• Regularity of follow-up examinations
The goal is not only to achieve clear vision quickly but also to ensure long-term healthy and comfortable eyesight.

Contact lens users should pay close attention to three important points.
First, sleeping with contact lenses on is absolutely wrong. The cornea of the eye receives its oxygen from tears and from the air, and there are no blood vessels in the corneal layer. With contact lens use, the oxygenation of the eye decreases to some extent. Therefore, we should never sleep at night while wearing contact lenses. Before going to bed, we should definitely remove our lenses and place them in their case. No matter how high the oxygen permeability is, this is the recommendation we follow. Manufacturers sometimes state that you can sleep without removing your lenses. However, if you have no difficulty putting in and removing lenses and have no special condition that prevents this, you should definitely remove your lenses before going to bed.
The second common mistake is continuing to use contact lenses when there are complaints such as redness in the eye, discharge, or inability to tolerate light. In such cases, contact lens use should be paused. Because if lenses are used in these situations, the condition may worsen and there may be a risk of infection. Therefore, if while using contact lenses you experience symptoms such as light sensitivity, redness, stinging, or tearing, you should definitely stop using the lenses.
The third important point is that hand hygiene must be very good before wearing, inserting, and removing contact lenses. We should not enter swimming pools, the sea, or the bathroom while wearing contact lenses.

Lazy eye is a vision problem that typically develops during childhood and often progresses unnoticed.
Children usually do not report vision problems because they can see well with one eye.
This is why it is crucial for parents to notice small warning signs.

Eye examinations at an early age can help detect and treat lazy eye effectively.
Remember, identifying issues early is an investment in your child’s future.

I would also like to explain the stinging sensation in the eye.
One of the most important causes of stinging in the eye, and one of the reasons we most frequently encounter under outpatient clinic conditions, is dry eye. Dry eye can be seen in many people. In particular, working environments, dusty settings, increased use of computers and tablets, and driving for long periods with sustained attention are factors that increase dry eye.

Patients usually describe their symptoms by saying, “My eye is stinging,” “I feel as if a handful of sand has been thrown into my eye,” or “I get sleepy very quickly and feel a heaviness in my eye.”

We see this more frequently especially in women who have entered menopause. As hormone levels decrease, the incidence of dry eye increases. We also very commonly observe dry eye in connective tissue diseases and rheumatologic conditions. These patients most often present with complaints of stinging.

Of course, there may be other causes as well. Having undergone surgery can be one of them. Laser surgery or cataract surgery, pterygium surgery, or a foreign body entering the eye can also manifest itself as stinging.

However, the most common and predominant cause we encounter is dry eye.
