Horizontally resorbed alveolar ridge is one of the challenges of Oral Implantology. Without insufficient width, the long-term implant therapy success may be comprimised. To increase the width of a horizontally resorbed ridge with, a unique procedure known as ridge split operation can be used. The inner and outer layers of alveolar bone are separated with piezosurgery and the gap between the bone plates is filled with bone fragments that are called bone grafts. Implant placement may be staged or simultaneous, depending on the flexibility and volume of the bone. With piezosurgery, the procedure can be performed even on over-absorbed bones. The procedure may be performed in partial or fully edentulous ridges.
