Fake social media account impersonating former President Paula-Mae Weekes targets vulnerable citizens
Paula-Mae Weekes has warned the public about a fake social media profile impersonating her and targeting vulnerable individuals with a financial scam.
In a statement, Weekes said the fraudulent account, operating under the name “Hon. Paula-Mae Weekes,” has been contacting people—particularly single mothers and women in need—with false promises of $175,000 in Government funding to start small businesses.
According to Weekes, the scam account requests Government-issued identification or a Trinidad and Tobago passport, along with payments ranging from US$95 to US$350, allegedly to facilitate the release of funds.
She stressed that this is unequivocally a scam and urged anyone who may have been targeted or affected to report the matter to the police, providing all available information, including correspondence and banking details.
Weekes also cautioned the public to remain vigilant when engaging with social media accounts, particularly those claiming to represent public figures. “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is,” she said, noting that legitimate funding agencies do not ask for money in order to release funds.
She further clarified that she operates only two Facebook accounts—a personal account, on which no business is conducted, and her official business page, PMW Training and Consulting.
Members of the public are being advised to exercise discernment and avoid sharing personal or financial information online.— Story by I.A.N News
