Remembering Infant Loss ~ Dr. Catherine Minto-Bain

I still remember the first medical emergency I was called to in Trinidad and Tobago, 15 years ago.

I had just moved from London and started working as an OBGYN and I was called to a pregnancy loss. A late miscarriage of twins due to an infection.

The mother was young, barely 20 and delivered the babies without the support of family, friends or the father. Just myself and a nurse in the delivery room. This was a time when partners and family were not allowed in the room to give their support. How far we have come from those days and yet how far we have yet to go.

There was no support in the hospital for her. No grief counselling. No pictures of her babies, or hand or footprints as memories of her children, however brief and fleeting their lives were.

Today, we may have better support in our health institutions. But we can also do better when it comes to talking with, and supporting, the people who we know have been through this heartache and loss. This week, let's look out for on social media, and think about leaving a supportive comment.

Many grieving parents will light a candle to remember their lost babies this week, an observance which has become known as the β€œInternational Wave of Light.”

As people around the world light a candle at 7:00 p.m. on October 15th in memory of their babies, the photos of these candles on social media create a wave of light that spreads across the globe.
