Postpartum depression (PPD) is relatively common, and help is available. By following the tips highlighted above, you can navigate this potentially frightening situation. Treatments could include individual counseling and, sometimes, medication. If you do use medication, you will probably be able to continue breastfeeding.
Don't be afraid to ask for help from your friends, family, and community. Parents who've experienced postpartum depression report that having a strong circle of supportive people played a key role in their recovery. If possible, talk to your partner about how you're feeling. You can also speak with other people you trust and who you think will understand your feelings. PPD is treatable - do not suffer in silence.

The birth of a baby can trigger a mix of powerful emotions, from excitement and joy to fear and anxiety. But it can also result in something you might not expect — depression.
Most new moms experience postpartum "baby blues" after childbirth, which commonly include mood swings, crying spells, anxiety and difficulty sleeping. Baby blues typically begin within the first two to three days after delivery, and may last for up to two weeks.
But some new moms experience a more severe, long-lasting form of depression known as postpartum depression. Rarely, an extreme mood disorder called postpartum psychosis also may develop after childbirth.
Postpartum depression isn't a character flaw or a weakness. Sometimes it's simply a complication of giving birth. If you have postpartum depression, prompt treatment can help you manage your symptoms and help you bond with your baby reach out to speak with one of our psychologists today .

Paternal Postpartum Depression (PPPD) often goes undetected as most of the attention tends to be placed on mother and newborn. Many new fathers suffer in silence because of the drastic change in their lives. This can be brought about by factors such as a history of depression, relationship instability, financial problems or stress, and a sick or premature baby. Men who've experienced the loss of loved ones—either in the adult years prior to becoming a parent or while growing up—are also at increased risk for depression. If you or a loved one you suspect may be suffering from PPPD reach out to schedule an appointment to work through these feelings with our clinical psychologist.

This year, for World Breastfeeding Week, the theme is Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility. Both mother and baby stands to gain tremendously from the process. Breastfeeding is particularly important given its role in the partial prevention of postpartum depression (PPD). Many new mothers struggle silently from PPD without even knowing what is happening to them. Shared responsibility therefore should extend to protecting mothers’ mental health especially in the fragile postpartum period.

The pandemic has been a challenging time for individuals and an even more challenging time for some relationships. Couples therapy helps improve the communication between couples. It assists with getting each person to see the other’s perspective as well as the underlying narrative that often subconsciously shapes their interactions. By working with a therapist each partner can gain tools to work through current challenges as well as potential future difficulties.

While all relationships are different, there are a few key aspects of healthy relationships. In a healthy relationship all parties should try as best as possible to maintain balance in the relationship.
Where there are imbalances in the relationship, each partner should feel comfortable enough to address them.
No relationship is perfect and there are always things that you can work on. Indeed some of these things take time to establish, such as good communication. However, you should always feel safe in a relationship and feel that you are equal with your partner(s) and you respect each other. This also applies in relationships with family and friends. If your relationship is not fulfilling your needs, speaking with a therapist for couple’s counselling can help you work through the challenges.
