Here’s a small ink and watercolour piece capturing a scene that no longer exists. Engine No. 15 of the Trinidad Government Railway, built in Leeds over 120 years ago, pausing at Reform Station on an afternoon run between San Fernando and Princes Town.

Here’s the history of the piece, written by :

“Engine No.15 of the Trinidad Government Railway heads the ex 2.24pm San Fernando to Princes Town Service, seen here at Reform Station at around 2.45pm as she pauses for passengers and mail. This engine was built by Messrs’ Kitson & Company of Leeds, UK in 1905, works number 4330. The engine entered traffic on the TGR on 27th July 1905 and it was rebuilt to the condition seen here in 1941. The engine was withdrawn from active service in July of 1968 and scrapped in 1976 after being stored derelict since 1968 at St Joseph.“

Here’s another small ink/watercolour piece. This building is on the Queen’s Park Savannah in Trinidad and is currently the home of an ice-cream shop. Could this be one of the more beautiful ice-cream shops in the world?

‘The Caribbean Architectural Alphabet’ started as part of 36 Days of Type, an annual online challenge that invites artists worldwide to interpret one letter or numeral a day for 36 consecutive days. Nick’s take? Build every single one from Caribbean architecture. The houses come from photographs he collects on his phone … snapped at red lights, on walks, on drives through town .. and from mental notes sketched out the moment he gets home. Each letter is paired with a short story by writer Tracy Craig, making this a collaboration between image and word, illustration and narrative.

The result is 36 houses that are unmistakably ours. The parlour fronts. The concrete stilts. The business facades. The structures we pass every day but never thought of as language … until someone framed them for you.

It works above a couch. It works above a desk. And if you know someone expecting? It works above a crib too … because the best way to learn your ABCs is through your own culture.

Limited edition of 250. 17”x19” Fine Art Giclée Print, signed and stamped by the artist.

DM us or shop directly at shopnicholashuggins.com .. we ship worldwide, so no matter where you are, these 36 little houses can follow you home.

Just finished this piece. It’s ink and watercolour on paper. I really enjoy doing these smaller pieces.
