Hi there, ladies! We've already spoken at length about the fact that precancerous abnormalities of the cervix are completely treatable and curable, but how do we do this?

There are 3 main ways that this is done: 1) Cryosurgery (freezing the abnormal cells off), 2) Electrocautery (using a small electric charge to burn the cells off), and 3) Laser surgery (using a laser for the same effect).

Outside of this, a doctor may recommend Cone Biopsy (removing a cone-shaped piece of the cervix which includes the abnormal cells) or a Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus, fallopian tube, ovaries and the cervix). However, these are considered drastic measures for advanced precancerous stages or for when cancer has already developed!

These treatments have all been proven to be extremely effective in preventing the development of Cervical Cancer, but remember that it all starts with detection through a Pap smear.

Hey Ladies! Last time we spoke about Cervical Cancer, we defined what cancer is. But what does that mean for your health?

Well, the signs and symptoms are similar to most cancers — inflammation, pain, bleeding — but once diagnosed, to regain your health, you now have to consider treatment options.

The three options available are surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. They may be used alone or in various combinations depending on the stage that the cancer is in. The best way to know which treatment option is best for you would be to talk to your doctor and discuss them.

However, in the case of Cervical Cancer, because the precancerous stages are detectable and treatable/curable, the old adage, "Prevention is better than cure," holds particularly well. Remember to contact your ObGyn to schedule your as soon as possible.

It's time to take a closer look at the Human Papillomavirus, or HPV. This virus is the primary cause of cervical cancer! That means that treating or preventing HPV also helps your cervical health.

With over 100 strains, only about 40 are sexually transmitted and only about 15 are high-risk for cancer. Two in particular - strains 16 and 18 - cause approximately 70% of all cervical cancer!

The good news? There are vaccines available to protect you from 9 strains of the HPV!

Give us a call at the Sanctuary to find out about getting your HPV vaccine.

For over 40 years, it has been my absolute pleasure and honour to serve and take care of women's health. The respect I had for women was only bolstered by my chosen profession and, therefore, I'd like to send out a heartfelt greeting on this day celebrating the women of the world. Happy International Women's Day!

"Hi ladies! A few weeks ago, we started talking about the Pap smear. You know what they say: Knowledge is power! So let's add to your knowledge today.

As we said earlier, your doctor collects cells from your cervix to test for the changes that occur before they become cancerous, but how do they do that?

There are several precancerous stages that cervical cells go through before becoming cancerous. The great news is that all of these precancerous stages are completely curable, but only if they are detected, which is exactly what the Pap smear does!

So don't delay! Time to talk to your doctor about scheduling one now. Come to the Sanctuary for the gentlest Pap smear out here. Contact me at 783-6303 or 318-3300 to schedule your appointment."

Let's talk about Cervical Cancer! Cancer is uncontrolled cell division, resulting in a tumour that could even become deadly. The main cause of Cervical Cancer is infection from certain strains of the Human Papillomavirus, or HPV, with over 70% caused by just 2 strains.

Did you know that it's mostly preventable? There are HPV vaccines available and, if there is free health care in your country, you can get it at a local hospital or clinic.

HPV is a sexually transmitted infection, or STI. As such, once a girl enters puberty, she and her parents should talk to her ObGyn about getting the vaccine.

Before cells of the cervix become cancerous, they go through several changes, all of which can be detected by the same Pap smear that we've been talking about. Once detected, these abnormal cells can be destroyed, preventing the cancer before it starts!

So make sure to get vaccinated and schedule your next Pap smear.

Hey ladies. It's still Cervical Health Awareness Month, so now's the perfect time to update that Pap smear you’ve been dreading. But don’t worry. At The Sanctuary, we do the gentlest Pap smear imaginable! But what is it and why is it important?

Named after a guy named George Papanicolau (imagine if we had to say his whole name... it would take all day!), a Pap smear is where a doctor gently sweeps the cervix to retrieve a small sample of cells. The doctor smears them onto a glass microscope slide (thus, "smear") and sends it off to a lab where a trained person (Pathologist or Cytologist) examines them under a microscope and sends back a report. This helps to prevent the occurence of Cervical Cancer! (More about this in our next post)

Once in your 20s, you should see an ObGyn to have your first Pap smear and do one every year for 3 years. After that, if they are found to be normal, once every 3 years is recommended.

Is it painful? That depends on the skill of the doctor/nurse, your comfort level, or several other factors. However, it's nothing to be afraid of and, in fact, should be something you look forward to doing for your own health!
