Late IHP Research Fellow Fu-shih Lin’s scholarly book “From Orthodoxy to Heresy: The History of Zhuyou Practices” has been published by San Min Book Co. and is available as of July 2024.
“Zhuyou” was a therapy by incantation, which was regarded as orthodox medicine by officials in ancient China. However, the training required to become a “zhuyou” practitioner was difficult, and the form of healing could be used by false practitioners to swindle patients, thereby arousing doubt among scholars. Despite being officially prohibited in the Ming dynasty, “zhuyou” continued to circulate in popular society. In “From Orthodoxy to Heresy,” Dr. Lin analyzes the history of “zhuyou” from the perspective of medicine, religion, society, and media, describing its formation, development, and decline. The book also indicates that “zhuyou” remained popular among the people as a strong medical practice with a tradition that was incessantly shifting.
