At 40 years old, she saw two lines appear on the pregnancy test and simply said, “Finally…”
It was a quiet statement, yet it carried the weight of ten years of marriage and countless disappointments.
In the Reproductive Medicine Department at Lee Women’s Hospital, we often witness couples making tremendous efforts to have a child. Some travel long distances for appointments, while others bravely continue trying despite repeated setbacks.
Sali’s journey is a vivid example.
She shared, “It takes almost an hour to get from Puli to Taichung. I often had to wake up early to inject myself, work late into the night, and still make it home on time to take my medication.”
Looking back to when Sali was 30, she and her husband had just married. Being young and in a period of changing work and life circumstances, they did not rush to plan for children. A few years later, as she approached the threshold of advanced maternal age, they began actively seeking medical assistance.
Sali had previously tried intrauterine insemination three times at other clinics, without success. During IVF treatment, she suffered a severe allergic reaction to medication, experiencing widespread redness, rashes, pain, and itching, even developing open sores. The emotional and physical toll was immense, and she once tearfully told her husband, “I can’t go through this again.”
During the more than one year she paused treatment, the scars on her skin gradually faded, yet she continued to think about the embryos preserved in the lab, a small but persistent source of hope.
At 40, Sali made a resolute decision to return to our hospital.
She explained, “Although the side effects from medication were difficult, they were nothing compared to the disappointment of investing so much effort and hope only to face failure. It took me a long time to gather the courage to continue.”
Doctor Chun-I Lee(李俊逸醫師) reviewed Sali’s previous treatment records and identified elevated uterine blood flow resistance and immune-related markers at the time of embryo transfer. For her new treatment, Doctor Lee carefully adjusted immunotherapy, avoided aspirin that had previously caused allergic reactions, and strengthened luteal support to stabilize the uterine lining.
Meticulous Sali labeled each medication with the date and dosage time using an oil-based pen to ensure she would not forget or take the wrong one.
With these measures, her uterine blood flow resistance reached an ideal range before transfer, and this time, the embryo successfully implanted.
Describing the moment she saw the positive pregnancy test, Sali said, “After such a long journey and many disappointments, seeing those two lines for the first time wasn’t overwhelming, it was more like, ‘Finally…’ I didn’t allow myself to be too excited.”
Thirty-eight weeks later, she delivered a healthy, adorable baby boy at Lee Women’s Hospital.
For many couples who have endured a long journey to conceive, those two lines represent unseen waiting, resilience, and hope.
Sali shared emotionally: “No matter how many setbacks you’ve had, if you want to try, give it your best. Doctor Chun-I Lee(李俊逸醫師) and the team at Lee Women’s Hospital are amazing and caring. Here, you’re not alone in the effort, everyone works alongside you. I hope everyone can have their own little miracle.”
