Asian Institute of Telesurgery(AITS) was created in 2008 under the guidance of IRCAD/EITS, one of the most famous surgical training center in the world. This groundbreaking alliance brings the 800 international experts affiliated with IRCAD/EITS to closer proximity of Asian surgeons, providing identical level of excellence in education while saving time and money in traveling. Since our inaugurati

on in 2008, more than 6000 surgeons from more than 50 countries have benefited from our training programs. The success of AITS is mainly due to the cooperation between two charismatic man, Professor Jacques Marescaux, and Professor Min-Ho Huang, President of ShowChwan Healthcare systems, one of the largest private hospital chains in Taiwan. Through close collaboration of these visionary leaders, the quality of the courses are maintained at identical levels with those in EITS/IRCAD. Our center is modeled after that of EITS/IRCAD, while offering larger space in the auditorium and the animal lab to provide more working spaces during activities. Through five years, we have successfully organized the same variety of programs(including General surgery, urology, gynecology, arthroscopic surgery, bariatric and metabolic surgery, endocrine surgery, neurosurgery, etc) as that in the original Strasbourg center, while creating new ones through our joint efforts.(Thoracic, Hepatobiliary, Upper GI surgery). The joint efforts not only enhanced surgical training in Asian, but also in return enriched those of the mother institute in France.

Our recent Surgical Endoscopy Course and General Surgery Intensive Course featured Dr. Philip Chiu — a pioneer and globally recognized authority in endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery (MIS).

Professor Chiu has played a pivotal role in advancing the field both locally and internationally, most notably through the introduction of robotic-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy for the treatment of esophageal carcinoma. Renowned for his innovations in endoscopic robotics, his development of a two-handed surgical robot earned him a prestigious award nomination.

His distinguished career spans contributions to gastrointestinal cancer treatment and continuous advancements in surgical technology. As he shared in our interview, “Robotic surgery sets a new standard compared to traditional MIS, offering greater mobility and freedom of movement to perform complex tasks while reducing joint strain for surgeons.

Reflecting on the 2025 B.E.S.T. Course (July 28 – August 1)

Our recent B.E.S.T. course brought together 48 early-career professionals for a transformative 5-day journey focused on tackling one of the most pressing global health challenges: obstructed labor, a condition that causes up to 10,000 maternal deaths each year.

Through an intensive curriculum blending hands-on surgical training, engineering innovation, and entrepreneurship workshops, participants collaborated with our esteemed international faculty—including Prof. Silvana Perretta and Prof. Dennis McWilliams—to develop technologies that aim to improve outcomes for laboring women worldwide.

As Dr. Wayne so beautifully expressed, we inspired our participants to navigate both technical challenges and emotional growth, working as teams to design impactful solutions that address real clinical needs.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of this course—you are the heart of IRCAD-Taiwan.

At IRCAD Taiwan, participants begin with covering the fundamentals of ultrasound imaging, ultrasound-guided procedures, and minimally invasive techniques.

In the hands-on sessions, they first learn to perform systematic ultrasound examinations of the upper limb, correlating real-time imaging with anatomical structures. This foundation leads into practical training on anatomical specimens, where participants perform ultrasound-guided procedures.

The course culminates with post-surgical dissection to evaluate and compare results — a scientifically validated process that deepens understanding, sharpens technique, and refines surgical decision-making.

IRCAD Taiwan Hernia Course on August 19-20 focuses on advanced laparoscopic techniques across various procedures for the general surgeon interested in advanced instruction in the difficult ventral incisional hernia patient.

The Wrist and Elbow Arthroscopy Course at IRCAD Taiwan is a technique-oriented course designed to expose physician attendees to the latest surgical concepts and techniques in wrist arthroscopy and endoscopy.

We provide direct faculty to student practical hands-on training sessions to maximize student exposure to the latest tools and techniques treating ulnar-sided wrist pain, carpal instability, fracture reduction, and nanoscopic carpal tunnel release.

IRCAD Taiwan 的「腕關節與肘關節關節鏡課程」為一門技術導向的專業課程，旨在讓醫師學員深入了解最新的腕關節鏡與內視鏡手術理念與操作技術。
