A Subtle Relationship Mistake

From a therapist’s perspective, one common but often unrecognized relationship dynamic is when a wife slowly shifts from being a partner to taking on a mothering role toward her husband. While this usually begins with care, responsibility, or love, it can quietly alter the emotional balance of the relationship.

When a wife starts over-functioning—managing emotions, decisions, routines, and even accountability—the husband may unconsciously slip into a dependent or childlike position. Intimacy, attraction, and mutual respect often decline because desire does not thrive in a parent–child dynamic.

Over time, the husband (now psychologically positioned as the “son”) may begin to reject, resent, or emotionally discard the wife, much like an adolescent pushing away a mother to assert autonomy. This rejection is often misunderstood as cruelty or narcissism, but clinically it reflects role confusion and unresolved dependency.- Nazma Chagani .
