The Sickle Cell Foundation of Tanzania is a non-profit organization that supports the prevention, care, and effective management of sickle cell disease in Tanzania. The Foundation was established in recognition of the devastating impact that the disease has on our society and the current inadequacies in its detection, prevention and management. The Foundation works in partnership with local and international government agencies, philanthropists, local and international medical centres and universities, research institutions, dispensaries, civil society organizations, private companies, individuals and other stakeholders to address sickle cell disease in Tanzania.

Katika kipindi hiki ambapo Tanzania na nchi nyingine duniani kote zinapambana na ugonjwa wa Corona, ni muhimu kufahamu kuwa wagonjwa wa sikoseli wanapitia katika changamoto za kipekee.

Kulingana na maelezo ya watafiti na wanasayansi, miili ya wagonjwa wa sikoseli huwa dhoofu na hivyo kupungukiwa na uwezo wakustahimili mapambano dhidi ya magonjwa mbalimbali.

Mimi ni mmoja kati ya mamilioni ya watu duniani wanaoishi na ugonjwa wa sikoseli. Pia, ni mwenyekiti wa jumuiya ya watu wanaoishi na ugonjwa huu ambao hutokana na kurithi vinasaba vyenye hitilafu katika chembe za hemoglobin ambazo hutengeneza seli nyekundu za damu.

Kwa , takribani watoto 11,000 huzaliwa wakiwa na sikoseli kila mwaka na kulingana na utafiti wa Modell na Darlison, magonjwa ya jamii ya sikoseli huchangia hadi 3.4% ya vifo vya watoto chini ya miaka 5 dunia nzima. Inakadiriwa kila mwaka, vifo vya watoto wachanga ni kati ya 70 hadi 80 kwa kila vizazi hai 1000.

Kuna uhitaji wa haraka wa mkakati wa tiba za ugonjwa wa sikoseli (selimundu) barani Africa, hatahivyo, hapa nchini Tanzania kuna mambo kadhaa yakujifunza kuhusu juhudi za uwekezaji katika mapambano dhidi ya ugonjwa huu. Sikoseli ni ugonjwa unaosababisha seli nyekundu za damu kuwa na umbo lisilo l
