The blood that comes out during cupping (wet cupping / hijama) shows some distinct characteristics compared to venous blood drawn in a hospital:
1. Higher concentration of waste products
Cupping blood often contains more oxidized molecules, uric acid, heavy metals, and inflammatory mediators.
Studies show it may reduce oxidative stress markers.
2. Darker color & thicker consistency
Because it contains deoxygenated blood, cellular debris, and stagnant blood from superficial tissues.
Less oxygen gives it a darker appearance.
3. Presence of micro-clots and coagulated particles
Cupping tends to draw blood that has fibrin clots and aggregated red cells, which can obstruct circulation if left in tissue.
4. Lower hemoglobin and red cell counts than venous blood
Analysis shows cupping blood usually has fewer healthy red blood cells, meaning it removes “excess or impaired” ones.
5. Higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines
These are molecules linked to pain and inflammation. Their removal helps explain why patients often feel pain relief.
