TIPS ON PIG FEEDING COST ESTIMATION
Christopher Mulindwa - 10th.05.2023
A pig farmer plans feeding for two categories of pig herds on farm:
1. The reproductive herd: This is the production engine of the farm. It produces either pigs for growing to slaughter or sale to other farmers. The reproductive herd includes; Gilts, Sows and Boars.
2. The commercial herd: Includes all pigs being grown for slaughter on farm including; Weaners, Growers and Finishers.
THE REPRODUCTIVE HERD
The feeding cost plan is divided into 3 sub categories listed below together with their average rations:
- Dry sow diet = (Ration 3kg)
- Gestating sow diet = (Ration 3kg)
- Lactating sow diet = (Ration 6kg)
FEEDS REQUIRED PER PRODUCTION STAGE:
- Dry sows (Average duration from weaning to Insemination is 5 days) = 15kg
- Gestation (Average duration is 114 days) = 342kg
- Lactation (Average duration is 28 days) = 168kg (Fed adlibtum)
- Wastage (Average duration 147 days) = 18kg.
Total: 15+342+168+18 = 525kg
THE COMMERCIAL HERD
The feeding cost plan is divided into 4 sub categories;
- Creep diets
- Starter diets
- Grower diets
- Finisher diets
AGE & AVERAGE QUANTITY CONSUMED.
7 - 4 Wks (500g up to weaning)
4 - 8 Weeks (Ration = 1kg)
8 - 16 Weeks (Ration = 2kg)
16 - 24 Weeks (Ration = 3kg)
AVERAGE QUANTITY OF FEEDS
4 - 8 Weeks (1×28) = 28 Kg
8 - 16 Weeks (28+28) × 2 = 112 Kg
16 - 24 Weeks (28+28) × 3 = 168Kg
Totals: 168 + 112 + 28 = 308Kg.
NOTES:
1. Both low and high protein concetrates can be used to mix all diets mentioned above except creep. Creep is a lactose based diet and should be highly palatable and digestible. It is better to buy it as a complete feed directly from the manufacturer. Nuscience has availed its creep feed:- Babistar safe on Uganda market so can access it from where you buy the concetrates.
2. Realistically, the quantity of feeds consumed by a pig from weaning (If done at 4 weeks) to finishing (24 weeks) is about 270 kilograms where very minimal wastage is experienced. I over estimated quantity consumed between the 8th - 16th week to cover for excessive wastage experienced by most farms in Uganda due to use of improper feed troughs. Infact the total feeds required per finisher sometimes exceed 308 kilograms on most farms.
3. Like seen above, the cost of production per piglet also goes very high where wastage is excessive.
4. The total profit from either selling a piglet or finisher is determined by both price per kilogram of specific complete feeds required at different stages of production or growth and price per piglet or kilogram of pork. The lower the price of feeds, the higher the profit per piglet or finisher sold. The higher the price in market, the higher the profit per piglet or finisher sold.
Quality nutrition is very important for the success of every pig farming business. Making feeds on your farm using Nuscience's nutritional solutions will help you cut feeding costs while availing quality feeds to your pigs. Use the pig 25% concetrate where access to quality Soycake and Sunflower is difficult or the pig 5% concetrate where you have access to quality Soycake and Sunflower.
Nuscience has also introduced creep feed:- Babistar safe on the East African market. This means early weaning is now possible.
