💊 Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is a commonly used medication in and out of hospital.

When used clinically we need to ensure our patients are not using other anti inflammatories concurrently.

A good example of this clinically is when a patient has had surgery in the morning and is on the surgical ward in the afternoon and experiencing some discomfort. A pain relief option may be ibuprofen amongst the other options. On review of the anaesthetic chart the Anaesthetist has administered Paracoxib during surgery. This medication is an anti inflammatory and has a 24 hour coverage for it use. Therefore, an alternate medication would be chosen.

When conducting a pain assessment and considering pain management options, especially for the acute period following surgery, remember the MULTI MODAL APPROACH.

⭐️ Anti-inflammatories play an important role in the multi modal pain management regime. Other modalities for managing pain throughout the peri-operative period include regional anaesthesia, infiltration of local anaesthesia and the use of opiates and other medications.
