Turner Syndrome is a genetic condition affecting approximately 1 in every 2,000 live female births worldwide. It occurs when one of the X chromosomes is missing or partially missing, leading to a variety of developmental challenges and health issues. Common characteristics include short stature, delayed puberty, infertility, heart defects, and certain learning disabilities.

Despite these challenges, girls and women with Turner Syndrome are often bright, resilient, and lead successful lives. Early diagnosis and comprehensive medical care are crucial to manage symptoms and enhance quality of life. February is recognized as Turner Syndrome Awareness Month, providing an opportunity to educate others and support ongoing research. By increasing awareness, we can foster understanding and advocate for better resources and support for individuals affected by this condition.

The Child and Youth Healthy Futures Lab at the University of British Columbia Okanagan is leading a study on racism in mental health services. We are looking for youth aged 15-24 living in BC to explore how racism affects their experience with mental health and their use/ non-use of mental health care through an interview or focus group. Participants will receive an honoraria to thank them for their time.

Dear colleagues,

I am proud to share that the Ukrainian adaptation of the Canadian questionnaire FIATS-AAC38 is available for download. It measures the dynamics of communication skills of children who use alternative and augmentative communication. I arranged and led the adaptation and validation of the scales in Ukrainian as part of my PhD.

This tool particularly caught my attention for its versatility and applicability to assessing communication skills in children of a broad age range and, most importantly, without verbal speech, with complex communication needs. With Christmas coming up soon, the CAAC has designed a communication board to encourage meaningful conversation about this special occasion. Individuals who use AAC might not have the vocabulary to share their thoughts and experiences about religious holidays. This board aims to promote inclusion and strengthen connections during this festive season. Having access to relevant vocabulary is essential for building a sense of identity and fostering community through communication.
