The Sleep Cycle and Importance of Sleep.
When you are asleep, your mind and body recurs, your eyes are shut, and your nervous system is deactivated. It puts your whole body under a relaxed sedated state. Sleep plays a huge role in your survival because ;
1.Its Important for energy Conservation.
2. It Relaxes mind and body and refreshes the brain.
3. It plays a role in reparation of worn out tissue and protein synthesis. (NREM 3)
4. It is responsible for neural reorganization and growth in CNS structure and function mostly in Children.
Sleep has vast functions of which a few are mentioned above. There are 4 to 5 stages in the sleep cycle:
1. NREM 1: This is the first stage of Non Rapid Eye Movement. It is a transition between sleep and wakefulness. It is fondly known as dozing stage. It relaxes your body, twitches your muscles, slows down your brain, heartbeat, and eye movement.
2. NREM 2 : Its duration is about 20 munites. In this stage, you are less aware of your sorroundings. Your body temperature is lowered. Your eyes stop moving. Your Brain gathers, filters, and processes memories you acquired the previous day.
3. NREM 3 : This is known as the Delta sleep. In this stage, environmental noise or factors are not likely to wake the you. Its a period of deep sleep. Your body begins to repair itself here, it relaxes your muscles completely and slows down breathing and heart beat.
4. REM Sleep: It is a stage of Rapid Eye Movement. This is the dream stage and in this stage, your body is completely paralysed preventing you from acting out your dreams. It starts about 90 munites after falling asleep. After this stage, stage 2 is repeated and the cycle continues until the whole cycle is repeated about 4 to 5 times.
Before awakening, the cycle passes stage 1 again were you wake.
Tips.
For good and healthy sleep avoid external factors that can wake you inappropriately like noise. If you wake inappropriately or forcefully from a crucial stage of the cycle (stages 2 to 4) it causes heavy migraine lasting from hours to days.
Being healthy is a priority.
