Can drinking alcohol affect your chances of achieving pregnancy?
In a recent study done by a group of researchers at Boston University, researchers found that women who drank more than 14 alcohol servings per week experienced a nearly 20 percent decrease in their capacity to achieve pregnancy.
Drinking can affect fertility in women, by:
- Disrupting the monthly menstrual cycle and ovulation.
- Increasing the risk of endometriosis.
- Delaying the onset of conception.
- Altering levels of estrogen and progesterone.
- Increasing the risk of miscarriage, including harm to the fetus.
In men even moderate drinking can affect fertility by reducing s***m count and quality.
If you are trying to get pregnant, the medical consensus is that you should stay away from alcohol. At the very least, to maximize your chances of a healthy and successful pregnancy, weekly alcohol intake should fall within five drinks or less per week.
