National Midwives Association of Uganda Takes Action Against Maternal Deaths

Midwife leaders under the SAFE BIRTH PROJECT, supported by UNFPA Uganda, are conducting national trainings to equip midwives with skills to manage Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) — the leading cause of maternal deaths in Uganda.

This effort is part of a countrywide push to improve maternal health and save lives.

💜🌍 *World Fistula* *Day 2025* 🌍💜

*Her Health Her right:* *Shaping a future* *without Fistula*

Today, we stand in solidarity with women and girls living with *obstetric fistula* a preventable childbirth injury that continues to affect the most vulnerable.

Obstetric fistula is not just a health issue it's a human rights issue.
No woman should suffer in silence. No girl should lose her dignity because of a lack of access to timely, quality maternal care.

Let’s commit to:
🔹 Ending fistula through access to skilled birth care
🔹 Supporting survivors with surgery, reintegration & psychosocial care
🔹 Breaking stigma through awareness and advocacy
🔹 Advancing equity in maternal and reproductive health

Together, we can and restore dignity.

National Midwives Association of Uganda - NMAU team Arrives in Lira for World Fistula Day Commemoration!

We are excited to share that the team from the National Midwives Association of Uganda (NMAU) arrived yesterday 28th May 2025 in Lira ahead of the World Fistula Commemoration Ceremony, proudly supported by UNFPA Uganda

The activities kicked off with a planning meeting at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, where we strategized for key community-focused engagements including:

🫶 Radio talk shows – to raise awareness on obstetric fistula and maternal health
🫶 Home visits to near-miss survivors – to show support and learn from lived experiences
🫶 Community dialogues – to educate, listen, and empower our people

These efforts aim to break the silence around fistula, restore dignity to survivors, and strengthen community awareness on how to prevent maternal complications. Together, we’re creating a ripple of change one conversation, one visit, one life at a time.

National Midwives Association of Uganda - NMAU Joins the world to commemorate the World Fistula Day. Join us as we engage the community.

The good news is: fistula can be prevented.

1. Go for Antenatal Visits Early
Don’t wait until you’re about to give birth. Start going to the clinic as soon as you know you’re pregnant. midwives will check you and guide you on how to prepare for a safe delivery.

2. Give Birth with Skilled Health Workers
Always plan to give birth at a health center or hospital. If anything goes wrong, you will be in safe hands. Giving birth at home with no trained help can be dangerous.

3. Don’t Delay When Labor Starts
If labor begins, go to the health facility early. Don’t wait at home hoping things will get better. Delayed labor is the biggest reason many women get fistula.

4. Protect Young Girls from Early Pregnancy
When young girls get pregnant before their bodies are ready, they are at higher risk of fistula. Let’s keep our daughters in school, talk to them, and support them to wait until they are mature before having children.

5. Eat Well During Pregnancy
Food is medicine. A well-fed mother is a strong mother. Eating nutritious food helps her carry the baby well and reduces the risk of complications.

6. Community Support Saves Lives
Men—support your wives to go for check-ups. Elders—advise the young ones wisely. Neighbors—help a woman in labor get transport. Leaders—speak up and support health programs.

Let’s not stay silent. Let’s talk about fistula. Let’s prevent it. Every mother deserves to give birth in dignity and return home healthy and happy.

Midwife Tindi Edwin Maruti shares a powerful moment when he met a young mother showing signs of high blood pressure in pregnancy medically termed as pre eclampsia.
It was a silent storm brewing one that could have taken both mother and baby. But thanks to quick thinking, support from a supervisor, and close monitoring, they made it through.

This story is a reminder that midwives are not just caregivers they’re protectors. With the right knowledge and teamwork, we can face even the toughest moments and save lives.
