I was talking to a friend, Naira, the other day. She's always been the vibrant, energetic one, the life of the party. But behind that dazzling smile, she's been carrying a heavy burden for months.
She confided in me about a deep, persistent sadness arising from a dysfunctional marriage – a feeling she keeps hidden, afraid to break the cheerful façade she has built of a happy marriage. (reminds me of the Luganda song, by Serena Bata, 'ebisenge' - loosely translated to mean that public smiles do not mean that a couple is happily married). She felt she couldn't talk to anyone, fearing judgment. Her silence was deafening, not just to her but to those of us who cared about her.
Naira's story isn't unique. So many of us struggle silently with mental health challenges. The stigma surrounding these issues makes it difficult to reach out, to find the support we need. We often feel isolated, and just keep going, like our struggles are unimportant.
But they ARE important. Your feelings matter. If you're struggling, please know that you're not alone. There are people who care and resources available to help. Don't be afraid to break the silence. Contact a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional. Starting the conversation is the bravest step you can take.
I offer free online counselling if you need someone to talk to. Or if your adolescent child needs such support.
