Marriage has been known to exist from the beginning of time. For Christians, we believe that when Eve was created, her union with Adam was not just meant to procreate, but to start a family, and that unit was supposed to bring a dimension of ‘togetherness’’. This unit has been the backbone of our entire purpose as a human race in the work we do, the way we socialize, the justice we fight for. It all goes back to making sure family comes first.
And for a family to be whole and successful, then the marriage between husband and wife must be recognized as something beautiful and complex, something that should not be taken lightly.
No matter the century, era, continent, country, marriage has always been held in high esteem. HOWEVER, we are living in a time when there are numerous forces at work against the concept of marriage. Promiscuity, polygamy, homosexuality and divorce are just a few examples of how marriage is now becoming of less importance in our society. And thus, many people, worldwide, are looking at it as a less viable option. Being broken hearted, prostitution, extramarital affairs and financial independence are taken as the norm, and even though wedding services are in an endless booming business, marriage successes are not.
The Knot Experience believes in marriage as an institution needed to uphold families, our communities, our countries, and our world at large. Backed by our past efforts in working with married couples through their personal experiences, we have acknowledged that there is a lot to be done in encouraging couples to make it count. Yes a good marriage is possible!
We understand that just like we are all different in nature, personality, character, ability (physically, emotionally and mentally), each marriage is different too. What works for one couple just does not make sense for another. And that’s a beautiful notion. It means that there is no exact recipe for a perfect marriage that must be followed to the T! It means that every married couple can create their own formula for success! But just like there are some fundamental ways for success in life (have a goal, work hard, manage finances), there are some clear approaches that couples can practice that can make their union more enjoyable ad have long term effects on them, their children, and the generations to come.
Before we come to those, we must note that we are living in the 21st Century. That comes with many implications. Some of the most obvious ones are we are living in a time when women are more empowered than they have ever been before. Also, the way we interact using technology has had a massive impact on the way we relate with each other. Even the time we give to socialize, the way we socialize, fashion, change in culture, globalization, impact from the media and entertainment, amongst other things, have given us a different world view from generations past, that has ultimately affected marriages worldwide.
Having these and others in mind, we have crafted a number of experiences that couples, married or intending can participate in to steer their own journey in defining their happily ever after. This is what we are all about. Helping each couple engage, grow deeper and closer as they discover and live out the full purpose of their marriage!
