Some fall foot care tips as we transition to October 🍁
1. Moisturize your skin: Cooler weather can lead to dryness, cracking, pain and even infection. Another great way to combat the effects of weather change on the feet is to begin a deep-moisture routine.
2. Take a Nail-Polish Break: Due to the chemicals it contains, nail polish can deteriorate the nail bed overtime and cause unnecessary discoloration.
3. Prevent Joints From Stiffening by Hydrating
4. Treat Yourself to Warming Foot-Soaks but be careful not to burn yourself or your feet during the process!
5. Try on your fall shoes to make sure there is enough wiggle room in the toe box 👞

PAD is short for Peripheral Arterial Disease. PAD is caused by a blockage or narrowing of the arteries in the legs when fatty deposits called plaque buildup. The buildup of plaque causes the arteries to harden and narrow, which is called atherosclerosis. This results in a reduction of blood flow to the legs and feet. This is commonly referred to as poor circulation.
*
*
Risk factors for PAD and other conditions that may complicate PAD include the following:
* Smoking
* High Cholesterol
* High Blood Pressure
* Physical inactivity
* Obesity
* Diabetes
*
*
Do not ignore leg pain. It is important to discuss any leg or thigh pain that you are having with your podiatric physician since it could be a warning sign of a serious disease such as PAD. Early detection of PAD can offer an opportunity to treat risk factors that can slow the progression of the disease and decrease the chance of heart attack and stroke.

Haglund's Deformity is a bony enlargement of the back of the heel bone. Sometimes it's called “pump bump” because the deformity often occurs in women who wears pumps.
*
*
The primary symptoms of Haglund's Deformity are an enlarged bony prominence on the back of the heel and heel pain. You might also develop blisters on your heels as a result of your shoes rubbing against the bump.
*
*
If the pain persists despite your home remedies, or if the bump continues to enlarge, it's time to see a podiatrist. A podiatrist can carefully evaluate your feet and create a treatment plan tailored to your feet.

A diabetic foot ulcer is an open sore or wound that occurs in approximately 15 percent of patients with diabetes and is commonly located on the bottom of the foot. Of those who develop a foot ulcer, 6 percent will be hospitalized due to infection or other ulcer-related complication.
*
*
Once an ulcer is noticed, seek medical care immediately with a podiatric wound care specialist. Foot ulcers in patients with diabetes should be treated to reduce the risk of infection and amputation, improve function and quality of life, and reduce health-care costs.

A person with a ruptured Achilles tendon may experience one or more of the following:
🦶🏻Sudden pain (which feels like a kick or a stab) in the back of the ankle or calf—often subsiding into a dull ache
🦶🏻A popping or snapping sensation
🦶🏻Swelling on the back of the leg between the heel and the calf
🦶🏻Difficulty walking (especially upstairs or uphill) and difficulty rising up on the toes
*
These symptoms require prompt medical attention to prevent further damage. Until the patient is able to see a doctor, the RICE method should be used. This involves:

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭. Stay off the injured foot and ankle, since walking can cause pain or further damage.
𝐈𝐜𝐞. Apply a bag of ice covered with a thin towel to reduce swelling and pain. Do not put ice directly against the skin.
𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. Wrap the foot and ankle in an elastic bandage to prevent further swelling.
𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Keep the leg elevated to reduce the swelling. It should be even with or slightly above heart level.

As we go into a long Labor Day weekend I wanted to talk to you all about rocker sole shoe or rocker bottom shoe which has a thicker-than-normal sole with rounded heel. Some rocker bottom shoes are purpose built to reduce the function or replace the lost function of a joint. For example, a person with a stiff big toe (hallux rigidus) may use a rocker bottom shoe to replace the flexion lost at the metatarsal joint. Rocker bottom shoes are also used to compensate for the lost range of motion, however caused, at the ankle joint. In such cases, the wearer maintains solid and stable footing while standing, but the rock of the heel assists with the propulsion, making walking more natural and less painful to the affected joints.
*
*
*
Try rocker bottom shoes if you are experiencing:
🦶🏻metatarsalgia - pain in the ball of the foot
🦶🏻forefoot arthritis such as big toe arthritis
🦶🏻midfoot arthritis
🦶🏻turf toe
🦶🏻neuroma
🦶🏻heel pain

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱:

👟Shoes That Don't Fit Properly Can Aggravate the Feet. Always measure a child's feet before buying shoes, and watch for signs of irritation.
👟Never Hand Down Footwear. Just because a shoe size fits one child comfortably doesn't mean it will fit another the same way. Also, sharing shoes can spread fungi like athlete's foot and nail fungus.
👟Examine the Heels. Children may wear through the heels of shoes quicker than outgrowing shoes themselves. Uneven heel wear can indicate a foot problem that should be checked by a podiatrist.
👟Take Your Child Shoe Shopping. Every shoe fits differently. Letting a kid have a say in the shoe buying process promotes healthy foot habits down the road.
👟Always Buy for the Larger Foot. Feet are seldom precisely the same size.
👟Buy Shoes That Do Not Need a “Break-In” Period. Shoes should be comfortable immediately. Also make sure to have your kid try on shoes with socks or tights, if that's how they'll be worn.

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that extends from the heel to the toes. In this condition, the fascia first becomes irritated and then inflamed, resulting in heel pain.
.
.
People with plantar fasciitis often describe the pain as worse when they get up in the morning or after they have been sitting for long periods of time. After a few minutes of walking, the pain decreases because walking stretches the fascia. For some people, the pain subsides but returns after spending long periods of time on their feet. Conservative treatment consists of stretching, icing, activity limitation, shoe modification and medications.
.
.
Call or message for an appointment today if you are experiencing plantar fasciitis. Take care of yourself and your feet 👣

Stretching has multiple benefits for both your body and your mind. Stretching improves flexibility and posture. When your muscles are warm and stretched, movement becomes easier and more fluid-like which helps with injury prevention.
.
.
It is important to not forget to stretch after walking, jogging and/or running. 👣

Here are some reasons to wear them:
1. To prevent blood clots during long flights ✈️ or long drives 🚗 or after surgery or when bedridden 🛌
2. Prevent swelling in feet, ankles, and legs which long term can cause varicose veins 🛑
3. During pregnancy 🤰🏻- especially if you are prone to varicose veins
4. Athletic performance 👟 - improve performance and reduce injuries while running or when participating in athletic events
5. For arthritis in knees🦵🏼, feet🦶🏻 or ankles as they compress and help with reducing swelling in soft tissues around the joint 🦴
6. If your job or daily activities require prolonged standing on your feet 👣
.
.
I started wearing compression socks (15-20mmHg) during residency training due to standing for long hours which was causing pain and swelling. I love wearing my compression socks as they help me tackle my long days with light feet! 👣
.
.
**** Please consult your podiatrist or primary care doctor before wearing compressions socks! ⚠️
