This is penne pasta with chicken, bacon, tomatoes, and spinach sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. No sauce, just some olive oil over the noodles - It was delicious!

Our Assistant Director and Registered Dietitian, Amy, recently went to the United Fresh Produce Association 2017 Convention in Chicago.
School Nutrition leaders were invited to attend the conference because we help to serve a very important produce market… Students! Amy met other leaders in school nutrition and even one of the keynote speakers, Donna Martin, EdS, RDN, LD, SNS, FAND, who is the President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics!

Today is officially Stop Food Waste Day, but we hope every day is treated this way. Each person can take simple steps to help stop food waste.
Stop Food Waste Tip: Revive your veggies!
Think wilted veggies have gone bad? A quick soak in ice water for 5-10 minutes can fix the problem – Bendy carrots will straighten right up, lettuce will crisp, and limp broccoli will find it’s strength again!
Just like our bread, our pizza is also made fresh daily!
We start with whole wheat crust, add sauce, cheese, and toppings, and put each pizza through our pizza ovens during lunch!
This reduces waste because we're able to bake the pizzas as needed and not have too much left over 🍕

Today is National Hummus Day! Hummus is made of chickpeas (also called garbanzo beans), olive oil, garlic, lemon, and tahini, which is made of sesame seeds.
Did you know hummus is available in the cafeteria? Look for it on the deli line, the Fruit & Vegetable bar, and in some On the Go options!
Tomorrow is National Grilled Cheese Day! Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup will be served at every school in the district. Add some fresh fruit and veggies to make it a healthy, balanced meal!

We had a blast sampling Green Smoothies at Northern High today! Have you ever tried one?
This smoothie had:
2 cups spinach
1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
1/2 cup of water
Place all ingredients in a blender until smooth and enjoy!

Dark leafy greens are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients including vitamin A, vitamin C, antioxidants, fiber, folate, vitamin K, magnesium, calcium, iron, and potassium. They also perform many functions in the body like promoting good vision, supporting immune function, regulating blood pressure, and may even help in preventing some types of cancer. 🌿💪
