Country Care Veterinary Center is a full service veterinary practice located in Afton, NY.
The doctors and staff of Country Care Veterinary Center would like to welcome you to our clinic's page. We strive to provide and promote the best possible health care for your family's pets. Dr. Valerie Ebert manages the majority of our equine patients as well as cares for our dog and cat patients. Dr. Ebert's main interests are small animal medicine and surgery. She also has a strong interest in equine medicine. Dr. Tim Slater provides medical and surgical care for anything you can get in the door (he makes farm calls too!). He treats anything from Dogs and Cats to wildlife and anything in-between. Dr. Slater's main interest is exotic and wildlife medicine and surgery.
Just a friendly reminder that we hate treating heat stroke and heat related injuries in pets.
So, with this expected heat wave, help save yourself a ton of money and your pet's life by keeping them inside, restrict exercise and play to just a couple minutes and give them access to plenty of fresh, clean water.
Take Care Everyone!
- Dr. Tim
Just a reminder, the office will be closed for appointments on Thursday the 4th of July, we will be back open on Friday morning. We hope you have a fun and safe Independence Day!
Here are a few good pet safety tips for the holiday from our friends at PetFinder.
Thanks for your support and have a great holiday!
Finally, it is that time of year again! Here is an important message from our friends at the DEC.
Please, unless it is injured, leave it there.
If You Care, Leave It There!
People occasionally find a lone fawn and mistakenly assume it has been abandoned, which is rare. Fawns should never be picked up. If human presence is detected by the doe, the doe may delay its next visit to nurse.
DEC is reminding New Yorkers to enjoy wildlife and their young from a safe distance and resist the urge to touch or pick up newborn fawns and other young wildlife.

Hi everyone! The wind and snow seems to have knocked out our phones and internet for the moment. We are here. All of Dr. Tim's surgeries went well and they can go home sometime after 3ish unless we talked about keeping them over night tonight.
Thanks and hopefully we will be back in action soon.
Binxy went missing near the Bainbridge Highschool. If you see Binxy, please contact: 607-376-1215 or 703-678-5830.

[10/17/18] Hi Everyone, we are having some issues with our phone lines. We are here, so if you need anything please just send us an email and we will get back to you as long as the internet stays working!
Due to some flooding in the area, the bridge (that is under construction) on Rt. 7 is closed at the moment. So those of you travelling from the Afton direction will want to take a detour down Algerine Street to get to the clinic. Along Algerine there is a spot where the water is flowing over the road too, so be careful! Thanks and hopefully everyone is ok.
- Dr. Tim
Update: We have at least one of our lines back in action. Who knows if they'll stay that way through the day.
Hi Everyone! We are experiencing some issues with our phone system at the moment. Spectrum is not sure when it will be repaired but rest-assured we are here. Our internet is still working so if you have any urgent questions please shoot us an email at [email protected] and we'll get back to you asap. Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience!
Happy Independence Day Everyone! Just a reminder that the office is closed for appointments today. We hope you have a safe and fun holiday.
July 4th is approaching, which means it's time to consider how fireworks will affect your pets. Shelters have a high influx of pets around Independence Day because the sound of fireworks can frighten them, and there's a greater chance they'll try to run away. Consider keeping your pets at home and indoors during the festivities, and talk with your veterinarian about ways you can reduce the risk of problems. Be sure your pet's microchip information is up-to-date in case they do escape and go missing. For more July 4th safety tips, visit http://bit.ly/2lC9d2M.
Hi Everyone! Anyone recognize this dog? Is out cruising around Guilford Center this morning!
Hi Everyone! Due to the winter storm and deteriorating road conditions we are going to close the clinic early today (3/2/18) for appointments. We would rather you all and your pets be safe and sound.
Stay safe and we will see you when this mess stops!
- Dr. Tim
Hi Everyone!! I just wanted to give you all a heads-up, that we are going to be changing a few things around with the clinic in hopes to better serve you and your pets! The main change will be with our Client Communications System. Over the next couple of days I'll be activating a new reminder email/post card system that will also give us the ability to send text messages to remind everyone of upcoming appointments. This will also allow us to send patient updates and any sort of quick/brief information you may need regarding your pet.
Another thing we are re-vamping is your Pet Portal which will allow you to have access to your pet's health history in case you need to see anything quickly (vaccines, prescriptions, etc). More importantly, your new pet portal will have a link to our new ONLINE SCHEDULER!! -- I know you all love calling a million times and then getting to talk to Stacey to set up an appointment. My hopes and dreams are that this new online scheduler will let you guys schedule appointments on your own time, without too much hassle.
Of course with any new change in technology, you will need to login to your portal and set up a new password. (which I know is annoying, I'm sorry) You will then be able to set up how you want your notifications and if you want us to be able to text you or not.
I am sure there will be a few kinks in the system as we get it up and running, but please bear with us and if you have any questions or problems please let us know and we'll get them sorted out as we can!
I will let you all know when its time to get signed up.
Hope all is well!
- Dr. Tim

Hi Everyone, we just received word that there are a couple of confirmed Canine Influenza (Dog Flu) cases that have been reported in Chemung County. Canine Influenza (similar to human influenza) is a highly contagious and affects mainly the respiratory system of dogs.
We don't want to alarm everyone, but let you know that we did bring the Bivalent - Canine Influenza Vaccination into the clinic this week for dogs that are at a high risk of being exposed to this disease.
Dogs are at the highest risk of contracting the virus at animal shelters, boarding kennels, grooming salons, canine daycare, dog parks and other locations where the animals are in close quarters.
“Typically, introduction of a single dog with influenza to a population of dogs in a kennel or boarding situation will result in rapid spread of the infection, with the expectation that 100 percent of the exposed population will become infected within five to 10 days,” said Amy Glaser, director of the Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory at AHDC. -- Highlights the potential transmission of Canine Influenza.
Please let us know if you think your pet may be at risk and we will discuss your options and the best way to prevent exposure to this disease.

Good Morning Everyone!

Thank your local plow driver, they are doing a tremendous job.
[03/14/17] Hi Everyone! Due to the deteriorating weather conditions we have decided to close the office today for regular business. It's just too unsafe for everyone to be travelling in. We have very limited staff this morning and they will be taking care of the hospital patients and will call to reschedule any appointments for today. Thank you for your understanding and stay safe!
UPDATE -- My owner has been located! Thank you everyone for your help!
This big handsome fella was found wandering around the Kirkwood/Colesville area (Fox Hollow Road). Unfortunately he only has an old rabies tag on and no other identification. Please let us know if you may know where he belongs!

This week we are recognizing and celebrating our wonderful Veterinary Technicians. Susan, Erin, Stacey and Kate are the staff members who greet you and work hard to make sure your pet's visit to the clinic is as smooth and stress free as possible. Behind the scenes they are doing it all. I take great pride in having a group of technicians who are very talented, hard working and some of the kindest, most caring and gentle souls you will ever encounter.
Each of our veterinary technicians is licensed in NY and attended a Veterinary Science and Technology program to learn their trade. After graduation they sit for their NY State Licensing Exam
They're all camera shy, so if I put some embarrassing photos of them working I'd be in huge trouble. But, if you see any of them this week, please wish them a happy veterinary technician week!
[10/06/16] Ok, our phones are back up and running!
Hi everyone! Our phone and Internet are out of service at the moment. It sounds like Time Warner is working on something in the area. Hopefully it'll be back in action soon.
All our surgery patients are doing great.
This time of year we start seeing an increased number of pets with strange GI issues. Here are a few things to watch out for.
vetstreet.com It may be fall, but your pet can still encounter a toxic plant, seed or fungi. From lilies to mushrooms, these fall hazards could be in your own backyard.
This really is one annoying disease. There is a lot we don't know about it, but it seems like each year we learn a few new and scary things:
scientificamerican.com The sneaky germ uses a mechanism like that of white blood cells to reach vulnerable tissues and hide from antibiotics

So for the past 3 weeks or so we've been working with Kim and Audrey from Every Dog's Dream Adoption Center who were involved with a gut-wrenching rescue situation here in Afton. They entered a home that was a dire situation and really worked hard to arrange for care and housing (I believe foster homes are still needed) for over 26 dogs who were living in less than ideal conditions. These ladies and their volunteers have been working tirelessly to care for this group of animals AND the family that found them stuck in a desperate situation.
I don't think I can say enough about how wonderful it was to see a rescue group acting locally and taking such care and compassion for the animals and the people involved in this situation. It warms me to the core knowing that there are people and groups out there like Every Dog's Dream and their "whole-istic" approach to a really tough situation.
If I can make one plea today, it is to please help support these women and their great work. These dogs need homes, they need supplies, they could use some monetary donations. http://everydogsdream.org/site/index.html
Thanks for all your hard work everyone! We appreciate it!
- Dr. Tim
