Speaker: Shari Corbitt, Psy.D.

Friday, October 12, 2018 General Meeting Lunch
11:30am - 1:30pm (Check-in 11:15 am)

Dr. Shari Corbitt is a licensed psychologist in the state of California and a specialist in the areas of addiction, eating disorders and chronic pain treatment. holistic and complementary treatment modalities. Dr. Corbitt founded Awakenings in an effort to provide cutting edge treatment for individuals suffering with substance abuse disorders as well as related emotional difficulties. Optimal wellness is the goal for every client.

"In this presentation we will discuss the treatment modality of Neurofeedback, which dramatically reduces the impulsivity alcoholics, addicts and trauma survivors experience when faced with triggers in everyday life. This reduction makes long-term, sustainable recovery possible. As importantly, clients faced with overwhelming trauma receive symptom relief from nightmares, insomnia, depression and high anxiety. It is a treatment that provides brainwave feedback to significantly reduce the underlying issues that promote relapse: depression, anxiety, trauma and intense stress. It does this with visual and sound cues to promote positive changes in the brain that reduce depressive and anxious states. The dramatic reduction in relapse rates, therefore are indirect - by reducing depression, anxiety and symptoms of trauma relapse rates are indirectly reduced."

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to differentiate between EEG biofeedback and Peripheral biofeedback and describe three different ailments each modality is best suited to treat.
2. Participants will be able to describe the various electrical frequencies emanating from the brain and determine which organ has a stronger electrical field in all mammals, and how this information informs effective neuroscientific treatments.
3. Participants will be able to describe in general terms, how neurofeedback technology actually operates in the treatment of mood and addictive disorders.

This workshop will review risk factors for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, describe ways to minimize risk and will focus on how to feel well and maintain wellness at this important stage of life. This FREE workshop is for you if you are planning to get pregnant, are pregnant, have a new baby OR are a healthcare/wellness provider caring for families.

California Psychological Association Statement on
Separation of Families at the Border

The California Psychological Association (CPA) and its Immigration Task Force have been appalled by the separation of children from their families at our borders. Despite the executive order that was signed yesterday changing this policy, the harm caused by this abuse and trauma has been done. Our profession’s scientific literature has documented that separating children from their parents can lead to anxiety, depression, attachment difficulties, trauma, and long-term emotional and intellectual damage. Several thousand children have been removed from their families and either placed in detention centers or foster care, and their whereabouts are unknown to their parents. Immediate efforts need to be made to reunite these families, keep them together while they proceed through the immigration process, and provide psychological support for the trauma they likely have experienced.

The California Psychological Association endorses the statement made by American Psychological Association regarding the harmful impact of such separation of families. The CPA Immigration Task Force has created a set of recommendations for mental health professionals who wish to work with immigrant families and a provider locator tool that identifies California psychologists who have experience working with immigrant clients and are willing to provide low to no-fee services. To use this locator service, start here, then under "Specialty Areas," search for "Immigration Psychotherapy" and/or "Immigration Psych Assessment." Sliding scale and pro-bono options can be found under "Accepts Insurance.” If you are a CPA member and have this expertise please consider listing yourself in the locator service as a means of making your services available to those who need them

The Blue Dot Project

Here is quite possibly the single most helpful thing you can say to a mom you love who might be suffering: Asking for and accepting help is not only a brave thing to do, but it's the best thing you can do for your baby. If you aren’t well, no one can be well. #RealMotherhood #NoShame #MomsMHMatters

Remember to ask a new mom how she is really feeling and if she is not feeling like herself, give her Postpartum Support International’s Warmline number to find help in her community. 1-800-944-4773.

The Blue Dot Project

We’re debunking the popular myth that as soon as mom lays her eyes on her baby, she is hit with intense feelings of love. That’s not always true, and you know what? That's o.k. It may just take some time. Let the new moms in your life know it’s o.k to not feel completely enraptured by their new baby. Or to be scared, overwhelmed, or just plain tired all the time. #RealMotherhood #MomsMHMatters

Remember to ask a new mom how she is really feeling and if she is not feeling like herself, give her Postpartum Support International’s Warmline number to find help in her community. 1-800-944-4773. .

The Blue Dot Project

Maternal mental health disorders like postpartum depression can affect anyone. We need to #Askher how she's really feeling & #Listen2Mothers when they tell us they are not doing well. #maternalMHmatters #RealMotherhood #Noshame

Check out the blue dot project.

This week we will be busting motherhood myths and helping moms to stop judging themselves by unrealistic standards!

Don't forget to ask new moms how they really feel. And, if she's really struggling, give her Postpartum Support International’s Warmline number to find help, or go ahead and call yourself 1-800-944-4773. #RealMotherhood #NoShame #MaternalMHMatters
