Whenever I put them on, I am immediately grounded and reminded of how deeply we are connected to the Earth. I love wearing them when I work around the house & yard as a humble tribute to the unknown farmer who lived their life in one of the most noble - albeit hardest - professions. The more they fall apart, the more they inspire! My posture is, of course, plough pose! 🌾🚜

🎀 YOGA CHALLENGE 🎀
~ Oct. 10-14

🎀 5. any inversion

Yoga was a vital part of my treatment plan. It was the eye of my cancer hurricane - giving me a desperately needed break from being sick. In yoga class, I was in control of my body. I was in control of my thoughts. I was in control of my life. I felt like myself again.

“Studies suggest that doing yoga while going through breast cancer treatment helps you get through it with fewer side effects,” says Dr. Timothy McCall, Yoga Journal’s medical editor and author of Yoga as Medicine. …. “Yoga can make a huge difference in a person’s fatigue level,”

Thank you, hosts & sponsors for this challenge, for giving me a platform to tell my story and for shedding light on a disease that affects so many lives.
Thank you everyone who participated for your love, encouragement & support. I was honored to be a part of it! 🎀💪🎀

🎀 4. sugarcane

I love my Gigi & Lulu! They got me out of the house for walks, cuddled me & kept me company when I was stuck in bed, & licked my tears away when I was sad. Who rescued who, indeed!

🎀 YOGA CHALLENGE 🎀
~ Oct. 10-14
🎀 3. standing backbend

Approximately 15 to 25 percent of individuals with cancer (a rate two to three times higher than the general population) develop clinically significant depression, which can affect their ability to function daily, including going through treatment.

Please don’t wait to seek profession help if you are struggling with the mental health toll of breast cancer. If you know someone that is struggling, please be understanding, hold their hand and assist them in getting the help they need.

🎀 YOGA CHALLENGE 🎀
~ Oct. 10-14
🎀 2. shiva

Shiva is the god of both destruction and transformation. The name Shiva comes from a Sanskrit root that means liberation or freedom. Such an appropriate pose for the challenge!

I went to yoga as much as my doctors would allow during treatment. Practicing yoga kept me connected with my body and connected to community. Not only did it help mitigate the physical effects of chemotherapy & surgeries, it eased a lot of the anxiety & stress of it all. Even when class ended up being a 90 minute savasana, the energy, love & support from the owners, yogis, and teachers was uplifting and inspiring. It gave me the strength to keep on keepin’ on and helped me get through some of my darkest days.

I even ended up in a few classes with one of my doctors who just happened to go to the same studio as me - it was so very special practice with her!

🎀 YOGA CHALLENGE ANNOUNCEMENT ~ Oct. 10-14
🎀 1. baby grasshopper
3 months into starting my yoga practice in late 2015, I found a lump showering at the studio after class. In the 2 months it took for the doctors to figure out what type of breast cancer I had (TNBC) & schedule the lumpectomy, I went from stage 0 to stage 2.
I was still many months away from my annual mammogram.
So, in addition to mammograms, PLEASE - still - check yourself regularly and often!

It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Reminder to check yourself regularly and often!
🎀 Early detection saves lives 🎀

I am a survivor (5 years!) and quit my high stress tech job 3 years ago to teach yoga & Pilates. Yoga saved my life and I’ve made it a personal mission to share it’s healing properties with as many people as possible.
Within months of starting my own yoga practice in late 2015, I found a lump showering at the studio after class. I continued to practice yoga throughout diagnosis, most of treatment, a double mastectomy, and reconstruction surgeries. Practicing yoga kept me connected with my body and connected to community. Not only did yoga help mitigate the physical effects of chemo & surgeries, it eased the anxiety & mental distress associated with a cancer diagnosis.
Throughout the month of October, I am offering discounted services to those affected by breast cancer; $50 for a 90 min one-on-one Zoom session + 2 week live-stream class pass/$80 for 90 minute one-on-one and 4 week class pass. (We can split the private session into two if stamina has been affected by treatment). Whether just diagnosed, currently in treatment or a survivor looking to regain mobility/strength, I would love help put a movement plan together. Plans include a combination of gentle/restorative Yin Yoga, 26+2, Slow Flow, classic Vinyasa, & Mat Pilates. New research from the Journal of the Nat’l Cancer Institute shows that moderate exercise can reduce risk of recurrence (55%) and mortality (68%)! All experience levels & ALL abilities welcomed.

Urdhva means above, padma means lotus. Sarvangasasa is shoulder stand.

❤️ I love this posture!!! Particularly the variation with the knees to the side on the floor. A great stretch for the middle spine and AMAZING compression for any knots of stress that develop behind the scapula.

“I just loved it! I was grinning like a Cheshire Cat at the story and realized I’ve never read that book! I didn’t want it to end! You are a genius my friend with all your creative motivational ideas.”

“I really liked the class last night!!  I liked the very sweet storytime at the end.  It seemed like it should have felt a little awkward, but I liked it WAY too much!”

“I was transported back to kindergarten nap time! It was like the little shoulder rub that put me to sleep!”

“I got some beautiful loving feminine energy and I don’t get a lot of that these days and especially this year being more isolated from the women in my life.  (Especially my real Mum!  🥺) So thank you.  You are now my Yoga Mom 🤣🤣🤣  lol”
