Keep Kirsten Kicking

Keep Kirsten Kicking This page is to follow Kirsten Steele's Multivisceral (Intestinal) Transplant journey. Due to this condition, Kirsten has had several surgeries.

Kirsten Steele has a rare condition known as Gastroparesis (GP) (gastro-, “stomach” + -paresis, “partial paralysis”), also known as delayed gastric emptying. GP may occur when the muscles of the stomach and intestines do not properly function, resulting in food remaining in the stomach for an abnormally long time. Normally, the stomach contracts to move food down into the small intestine for addit

ional digestion; however, GP causes food to then moves slowly or stops moving through the digestive tract. It was after her last surgery, the removal of her stomach from the digestive tract, that her doctors in Birmingham learned that these issues have affected her entire digestive tract. She now uses a feeding tube and a port to maintain nutritional intake. The feeding tube is used to help maintain her daily calories and the port for IV hydration and some medical issues. These are her main forms of feeding, but she does attempt to eat and drink every day.

Sunday, April 13, 2025 ...
It has been a good day. I am hopefully going home tomorrow. However, Robert started running a temperature over night. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. AFC said it is an Upper Respiratory Infection, so it should be ok for me to go tomorrow.

Today has been a better day. The doctor said that my lungs sounded better today and that I should be able to go home in a couple of days. They are taking really good care of me here. Thanks for everything .

We are moving to a room. She has just taken another round of antibiotics and a breathing treatment. Once she gets to her room and sees a doctor I will make another update. Thanks again.

Things aren't much better this afternoon, but they aren't any worse. Kirsten has been admitted, but still in the ER. She has Asperation Pneumonia and they have her on antibiotics, breathing treatments, and the are keeping a close eye on her oxygen levels. It seems to drop when she goes to sleep.
We have heard from the transplant team and the doctor said for the hospital to treat as if it is a normal case of Pneumonia, because the x-ray and CT came back negative for any problems with her organs. Thanks for all the messages. We appreciate each and everyone of them.

As of 1 am we haven't learned much. The ER doc said he thinks it is Pneumonia. Possibly from her endoscopy she had yesterday morning. He thinks she may have vomited during the procedure and the discharge went into her lungs. They may be admitting her, but we probably won't know for sure until later this morning. Please say a prayer.

I had my monthly endoscopy and colonoscopy today. It started out really good, but things went south soon after they were able to wake me. They are normally able to do this in under 30 minutes, but today the scopes took nearly an hour because they were trying to make my pyloric valve stay open. To do this they added botox to it, so it took a little longer than normal.

When I did wake up, I had the shakes and nausea from anesthesia, which has happened to me in the past. So, they kept me in recovery a little longer than normal to make sure everything was OK.

On my way home, I did something I hardly ever do; I slept in the car. When we got home I was still filling nauseous, so I went to bed to rest. When I woke about an hour later my temperature had spiked to 101.0, just shy of the concern level of 101.2.

I went back to sleep in hopes of the fever breaking. No such luck. I woke up about an hour later and it had jumped to 102.4. We called the doctor, the transplant team and a few other very important people (our moms). Then we were off to the ER at Grandview.

They have drawn blood, taken vitals, done chest x-ray, and an abdominal CT. We don't know anything yet, but when we do Robert will update the group. Thanks for your support and I am hoping to see yall soon.
