Children process through play!

Today we had tsunami warnings during recess for an earthquake that was a fair distance from us.

I talked with the class about movement in the ground. We compared what would happen if we were on solid ground or if we were on water.

We then were asked to *shelter in place* while administration determined levels of tsunami threats. While waiting for direction from administration, I overheard this group at the barn play space acting out an earthquake. I think they missed the direction to not pile a cow or goat on top of you! 😆 🤣 (evacuation were lifted eventually and we were all physically fine, aside from many headaches the adults developed🥴😬)

Play is the process of learning for children ✔️ 💕

I 🧡💛 Halloween!

Mary Poppins was in my costume rotation this year. I connect with that character as I love singing 🎶 nearly everything in class, love the kids and definitely believe "in every job that must be done, there is an element of fun"!💘❣️

Our school had a pumpkin🎃 decorating contest (love that Cookie Monster! 💙🍪), fun crafts and games in the class & always included is the popcorn skeleton ☠️hand...my favorite for so many years!

Today is International Day of Non-Violence ☮️

It began in recognition of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti's great works of leading non-violent communication and action, as well as honoring his birthday (October 2).

In Kidding Around Yoga, we used the mantra of "Peace Begins with Me" 💖

I teach the kids an extension to help everyone feel accountable to model peaceful communication and action:

Broken crayons! Triangle crayons! Scavenger hunts!

The kids had such a fun day today. An OT recommended broken crayons to me years ago to prevent the "claw hold" young children sometimes have. So I always stock broken crayons now, and kids never get upset when they break! 😆 A broken crayon is a perfectly usable tool. They are supposed to be that way! Added bonus that kids learn flexibility with materials.
Oh, plus our first steps towards "read the room" with "Find it" from . The kids love these scavenger hunts that teach them to use the room as a resource.

Where is that rascally gingerbread cookie?!🕵‍♂️🕵‍♀️

When I taught kindergarten, we used to start the year with the Gingerbread books to help keep maintain an Interest in school and help them learn their way around a new place. 🏫

I love seeing that tradition carry on with the kinders at this school. Some of these illustrating kiddos were in my tk class year. So happy to see they are having fun still✔️❣️

Sensory surprises with playdough!

My amazing teaching partner introduced this idea to me...
Make a ball of playdough with a smaller ball of playdough, in another color, hidden inside. 🕵️‍♀️ 🕵️‍♂️

Children pick a ball and roll it, mash it, squish it to find their surprise color inside and then create a new color with the 2 blending together. 🎨

The kids had such a *ball", pun intended 🤣

It is sent home in their *sunshine* cups, of course, reminding them "You are my sunshine" and they shine bright 🌞💫 ☀️ ✨️

Someone drew some incredible art on one of the wallball walls. I'm thinking an awesome adult came to school earrrlyyy since it was finished before school.
