Halfway Through the Year: A Lesson in Grounding 🌿
August, the halfway point in my year 💜
A time to refocus my awareness on being grounded.
In yogic and spiritual teachings, not feeling grounded is seen as a disconnect between the mind, body, and present moment. This disconnection can show up in many ways—mental fogginess, physical discomfort, or emotional instability. And lately, with all the pushing, pulling, and grasping I’ve been doing, I’ve felt the toll it takes.
In the Yoga Sutras, one of yoga’s most sacred and often-referenced texts, Patanjali reminds us:
“Practice becomes firmly grounded when well attended to for a long time, without break, and in all earnestness.”
When I think on being firmly grounded, I imagine the deep roots of an oak tree stretching into the earth, anchoring it with the strength and stability needed to grow and flourish. When I think on being well attended to, I’m reminded of mindful, focused care—offered with love and concern, without expectation of anything in return—like the care we give a loved one who cannot care for themselves.
When I reflect on the words a long time, I wonder, how long is long? I remember moments when a minute felt like an hour, a day like a week, or a year like a single breath. When I think on without break, I realize there is nothing more to add. It does not mean “mostly” or “more or less.” Without break is without break. And when I think on in all earnestness, I ask myself: What is most important to me, and what am I truly willing to do for that?
Recently, I caught up with a friend who shared a simple story from one yogi to another. The message was this: Ground yourself. Because how can anyone around you feel grounded if you are not?
I needed to hear that.
As this season comes to a close and another one begins, I’m choosing to concentrate on grounding—on the yield, the connection, and the presence that keep me rooted.
