Helping people hones my skills and brings me great joy. It helps make me a better person. It’s also how I provide for my family.
I find myself scrolling social media platforms looking at memes and keeping up with friends / family and their businesses, silently liking their posts and, from time to time, even commenting (mostly on Jonathan Tynes or Jason Crain’s posts). I like to look at some of the old memories that pop up on my timeline here and there.
Periodically, I’ll catch myself clicking on a post about some celebrity or sports game about a team I care nothing about, but I like the player mentioned in the original click-bait line. But lately, I’ve learned to simply exit out of the story before even reading it or just not click on it at all…. Why? Because I came to the reality that I truly don’t care about it. In the grand scheme of things, it really does not matter. My indulgence will not change the outcome. In fact, it’s probably just a waste of my time… the one commodity we cannot purchase more of.
Any business owner will tell you that you have to learn to look at things differently in order to grow. So, here are a few questions I’ve started asking myself about situations and where my focus turns depending on the answers:
1) Does this strengthen my relationship with God? Is God in it? If yes, I’ll keep pushing forward. If not, why should I care or let it waste my time?
2) Does the outcome effect me in any way? If yes, how does it effect me and what can I do to change or accept it? If not, why should I care or let it waste my time?
3) Does reading / hearing about this make me better as a husband, father, friend, boss, or business owner? If yes, how? If not, why should I care or let it waste my time?
4) Does this story / conversation / person make me happy that I invested my valuable time? If yes, it’s worth more time. If not, and it compromises my happiness, why should I care or let it waste my time?
5) Is or does this thing, article or person help(ing) me increase my financial stability or grow my business? If yes, I want to know more from this thing, article or person. If not, why should I care or let it / them waste my time?
I’m not big on New Year resolutions, because they’re often times broken in the first week or two.
However, for 2021, I made a resolution to reduce my exposure to toxic people and relationships as much as possible, and I’ve done pretty well with that. My circle got REAL small. Now let’s watch it get even smaller:
In 2022, I’m going to laser focus on some goals. So if you’re currently in my circle and you plan to still be at the end, here’s my 2022 resolution:
If it’s not making me BETTER, making me HAPPY, or making me MONEY, I. Don’t. Have. Time. For. It.
Iron sharpens iron.
