Happy Mother’s Day!

What a day! To celebrate the women who choose love every day from the moment they find out a soul is depending on them. It is such a beautiful thing to witness a woman walking into motherhood for the first time (or the tenth.) To watch as they learn and grow and make decisions that are the best for their baby, their family, and themselves. Women who sacrifice, die to their flesh daily, and choose to love deeply. This motherhood stuff can be overwhelming. It can feel like a million choices having to be made in every single day. Still, these women show up. These moms keep stepping up and making the best decisions for their family. May today be a day of love, joy, and grace over moms. May every one know how loved and appreciated she is. From the Moms in the very beginnings of motherhood to the seasoned. Moms watching their great great grandkids grow, may you know how important your roll is.
‘Don’t grow weary in doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.’ -Galatians 6:9

I had the opportunity to travel to Washington and serve in a birth center there. In a little mountain town full of the most precious people. I was invited into spaces I didn’t earn. Met with smiles and warm welcoming hugs as the new student midwife no one really knew, yet. Women who were at their most vulnerable allowed me to hold space and learn and grow at their births. I am grateful. There were hard moments. Moments of doubting whether this was really what I am supposed to be doing or if it was my pride wanting to prove something. I never want to be too prideful to learn and grow and change so God can use me. Working in a new place with new people and being able to see God’s hand over it was beautiful. Stepping out of my comfort zone so that God could show me new things and be glorified was awesome. The midwives I got to work with were all so kind, caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable! I learned an abundance of things serving this comunity. I learned a lot of clinical skills but more than that I learned a lot of interpersonal skills. There were moments with women and families, who were strangers, that deep connections were formed and changed who I am, for the better. I am looking forward to my next trip out there in the new year.

Life has been full and beautiful, recently. God has been so tender and kind. I got the opportunity to learn by being in a birth center setting with women who are absolutely full of knowledge and wisdom to share. I’ve been here for 5 days and attended 5 births in 4 days. It seems like anytime I start to doubt He says “Be still, I have a plan.” The ways He shows me He has good plans far exceed what I could ask or imagine. I’m so thankful. For this opportunity, for the people praying over me, and for the purpose He has.

“A normal physiologic labor and birth is one that is powered by the innate human capacity of the woman and fetus. This birth is more likely to be safe and healthy because there is no unnecessary intervention that disrupts normal physiologic processes.” Trust the process. It was designed to work. And in most cases it works best undisturbed. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3647729/

3 births in 5 days.
2 placentas prepared in 2 different forms for consumption. It was a busy week with little sleep, but oh so much joy and goodness. Every birth holds its own struggle and beauty. Each one leaves me in awe of the Creator’s absolutely pristine design for the entire process.

I’ve been seeing so many posts from women asking where they can birth that will “allow them to..” whatever it may be.

Ladies, this is your birth!
You are the boss.
It is your body.
You have the control.
You can choose a provider and then say no to their protocols and habits.
“No.” -a complete sentence!
You can change providers at anytime.
You can make informed evidence based decisions for your birth and fire anyone who doesn’t agree, in the moment. You do not have to be bullied or pushed into things you don’t want or need.

You can take charge of your birth. You can choose providers and spaces that give you space and want you to make fully informed decisions!

Women are strong. Women are smart. Women are built to birth their babies. Women, when uninterrupted, have instincts for birthing their babies.

You don’t need to ask permission to birth your baby the way your instincts are telling you. Get on hands and knees. Squat. Stand. Be side lying. Sit on the toilet. Stand in the shower.

First time mom with 1 hour of active labor! Baby arrived before the midwife and the two students could get there! Mom rocked it! What a great birth story they have to share! First boy of the year, me. He definitely made a grand entrance!

Microchimerism, discovered in 1893 by German pathologist Georg Schmorl, means specifically to us bereaved mothers, that our very cells hold DNA from our beloved babies.

So in perhaps psychological and spiritual terms, many of us believe our babies will always be part of us, but, it is true in physical terms, as well.

Our babies matter. They are a part of us. And, they change us.
