Dogs with ongoing gut issues, like diarrhea, vomiting, drooling, or blood in the stool, don’t always need another medication. In many cases, they may simply need more fiber in their diet.

A recent study in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that increasing fiber intake (about 2–3 times more than usual) using foods like psyllium, inulin, and pumpkin helped improve gut health.

The added fiber supported better balance in the gut, reduced irritation, and helped digestion work more smoothly. About 9 out of 10 dogs had better stools, and most showed overall improvement within a few weeks.

If a dog has trouble handling fiber, there’s another option. Adding digestive enzymes, especially ones with cellulase and hemicellulase, can help break down plant fibers. This makes fiber easier to digest while still providing the same gut health benefits.
