📣 Important Update: Alabama Changes the Medical Age of Consent for Minors (Effective October 1, 2025)
(Shared by Rapid Care Family Medical)
Big changes are coming to Alabama’s healthcare consent laws, and it’s important for parents, teens, and providers to understand what’s shifting.
🩺 What Changed
Under Senate Bill 101 (SB 101), signed into law by the Alabama Legislature:
• The age of consent for medical, dental, and mental health services has been raised from 14 to 16 years old.
• This means that starting October 1, 2025, minors under age 16 will generally need a parent or legal guardian’s consent to receive most non-emergency medical, dental, or mental health care.
⸻
⚖️ What Hasn’t Changed — The Exceptions
Certain situations still allow minors to consent on their own:
✅ Sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment
✅ Pregnancy-related care (including prenatal services)
✅ Drug or alcohol dependency treatment
✅ Emergency or life-threatening situations
✅ Emancipated, married, or independent minors (still have consent authority)
These exceptions were preserved to make sure minors can still access urgent, confidential, or sensitive care when needed.
⸻
👩👩👧 Why It Matters
This law aims to increase parental involvement in healthcare decisions for younger teens, while keeping exceptions in place for urgent and confidential care.
For healthcare providers like Rapid Care Family Medical, it means:
• We’ll continue to provide compassionate, confidential care to all patients.
• For patients under 16, we’ll now need parental or guardian consent for most visits and procedures (unless an exception applies).
• For patients 16 and older, you can still consent to your own medical, dental, and mental health services as before.
⸻
🕒 Effective Date
This new law takes effect October 1, 2025.
If you’re unsure how this change affects your child or teen’s care, our staff is happy to answer your questions and guide you through what consent is needed for specific services.
