In Yoruba Pantheon, Osanyin pronounced (or-sun-yin) is the Orisa (divinity) of plants and their inherent force.Osanyin was a lame man, He had one eye, one hand, one leg, one tiny ear that can hear even a pin drop, and one ear larger than his head that hears nothing. One morning Orunmila (the divinity of wisdom and divination) took his brother Osanyin to the farm and instructed him to pull w**ds from between the rows of crops. When Orunmila returned in the evening, he found Osanyin in the middle of the field just staring at the plants without a single w**d pulled. Not wanting to disturb what ever the point of focus was, Orunmila sat next to him and after a long time asked his brother what he was staring at and why he had not completed his task.Osanyin replied, “You have asked me to pull the w**ds, but there is not one w**d here.” He pointed to one spices of grass and said that is Alukerese “You would have me destroy her, but this will cure ailments of the heart.” He pointed to another one and said that is Eyin Olubisowo, she can cure more than 40 ailments without been married with any other plant. He point to many other plants, identifying them by name, their spiritual qualities and medicinal use.Orunmila then asked Osanyin to teach him and the other Orisas (divinities)how to use the herbs for spiritual and physical healing. Osanyin gifted each deity with the herbs and sacred knowledge most compatible with their individual spirits. In turn, the Orisas imparted this knowledge to humankind by instructing people on their usage
