Born into an education oriented family on August 16th, 1921 in Queens, N.Y., Marie M. Daly grew up understanding the power of education. She was the 1st Black woman to obtain a Ph.D in chemistry in the U.S. Her groundbreaking work helped clarify how the human body works. Growing up she fostered a love for books from her mother. Daly received her B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. consecutively and by 1948 landed a grant from the American Cancer Society for a 7-year research program at the Rockefeller Institute of Medicine, where she examined how proteins are constructed in the body. Her work with Dr. Quentin B. Deming disclosed the relationship between high cholesterol and clogged arteries. This work opened up a new understanding of how foods and diet can affect the health of the heart and circulatory system. In addition to all of her research, she taught biochemistry. Daly strongly urged her students of color to enroll in medical schools and graduate science programs. Honoring her father in 1988 Daly, initiated a scholarship fund for minority students to study science at Queens College.

When suffering from vertigo, finding a treatment that will work for often depends on the diagnosis of your condition.
In a recent Reader's Digest article, various medical experts including Dr. Lisa, weighed in on 15 different treatments for Vertigo. Dr. Ashe’s suggestion involved the use of antihistamines.
“As the name suggests, antihistamines block the effects of histamine, which can cause allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and vertigo. Internal medicine specialist, Lisa Ashe, MD, medical director of Be I Well Medical Group, recommends trying over-the-counter Benadryl or meclizine—which is available by prescription.”

It’s important that your children know the benefits of eating healthy foods and living a healthy lifestyle.
Here are 3 things you can do to encourage healthy eating habits:
1. Make sure to add fruits to their breakfast meals and vegetables for their dinner meals.
2. Take them with you when you grocery shop or go to a farmers market and point out the benefits of the foods you pick up.
3. Start a family garden to grow your own vegetables. It’s a great bonding activity and learning experience for everyone.

🤔 What are your ideas for creating healthier eating habits for your family?

As a teenager growing up in Lynchburg, VA, Dr. Vivian Pinn began thinking about doing research. She would later fulfill her desire throughout her medical career, holding such pioneering positions as being the first director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health (1991). “I’ve always spent time outside and in addition to my regular job in pathology trying to promote the interest of women and minorities, talking about the importance of research,” stated Dr. Pinn, who was the only woman and African American graduate in the 1967 Class at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Dr. Pinn was also the first woman to chair an academic pathology department in the United States, at Howard University. The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority member was elected as president of the National Medical Association in 1989. The UVA School of Medicine established the Vivian W. Pinn Distinguished Lecture in Health Disparities, and further honored her in 2010 by naming one of its advisory colleges for medical students in her name, the Vivian Pinn College of UVA. In the fall of 2017, UVA named a building in honor of its distinguished graduate. Are You Sick Or Do You Have Allergies?
How To Tell The Difference....
1. You’re the only one in the house who is sick
“Colds and the flu are both caused by viruses and are highly contagious,” Dr. Ashe explains. “If you’re suffering from allergies, you can not give it to someone else.”

2. In other words, if you’re the only one sniffling and your roommates or significant other remain symptom-free, you’re probably not sick to begin with. #bewellmedicalgroup #fluorallergies #flu #allergies

Good Morning Washington House Call with Adrianna Hopkins and Dr. Lisa Ashe: Fighting the flu and strengthening immunity.
- - - - - - - -
Why are limbs being amputated due to complications of flu?

“One of the complications of the flu is the pneumonia. The virus hits you and weakens your immune system and you end up getting a bacterial pneumonia and then that bacteria spreads to the blood and you have a systemic shutdown and that’s what we call sepsis.

When your a septic your blood pressures dripping and so we give them medication to raise their blood pressure. What happens is the pressure is squeezing the arteries and so your trying to get blood flow but the small arteries aren’t getting blood flow so sometimes the patients aren’t getting enough oxygen and they end up having to getting things amputated in severe sepsis.

The dangerous strain that we’re seeing is influenza A H3N2 that is more virulent than influenza B. The B is still around, so unfortunately if you had A you could still get B, but what we’re seeing largely in this area is Influenza A. We’re calling it “Flumageddon” around the hospital. It is probably the most severe (strain) in the past decade.” - Dr. Lisa Ashe

Find out how you can prevent this from happening by watching the entire House Call segment here:

#fightingtheflu #fluseason #flu2018 #bewellmedicalgroup #askdrlisa #gmw

This season there have been two dangerous and deadly strands of Influenza - A & B.
Don’t wait until it’s too late to make sure you get the shot or get to a doctor ASAP!

Flu facts from the @cdcgov:

Signs and Symptoms of Flu

People who have the flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms that usually start suddenly, not gradually:
Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle or body aches
Fatigue (very tired)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in young children than in adults.
*It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

How Flu Spreads

Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by tiny droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.
