I recently visited a beautiful lake in Florida over winter break. Going around sunset and listening to the birds brought a kind of magic… feelings of wonder and inner warmth that are hard to put into words.
Did you know there are studies showing that birdsong can actually improve your health? Listening to bird sounds has been shown to reduce stress and ease symptoms of anxiety and depression for up to eight hours. Some researchers even call it “auditory yoga” because it helps regulate the nervous system by lowering cortisol and blood pressure. One study I came across found that birdsong can also increase focus and concentration.
I feel this in my own body. When I pause and really listen … to the birds, the wind, my own breath, I remember what it feels like to be present. If you tune in to how your body responds in different settings, you’ll know what you need to return to a mindful space. For me, nature has always been a big part of that equation.
