1. Optometry Technician – 1 FTE
1.1 Qualifications
1.1.1 The contractor shall be a graduate of a military or civilian ophthalmic technician specific training course with at least three years of experience.
1.1.2 The contractor shall have and maintain national certification at the assistant level (COA; or higher equivalent).
1.1.3 The contractor shall maintain CPR certification and any other mandatory annual training requirements as per USAFSAM and local AFI’s.
1.1.4 The contractor shall have basic computer skills and be able to work with internal computer programs to support Aeromedical Ophthalmology/Optometry evaluations and be able to enter and extract data.
1.1.5 The contractor shall have a basic understanding of clinical optics. The contractor shall have a working knowledge of a range of ophthalmic equipment including: Optec 2300, Cone Contrast Test, Orbscan, Pentacam, OCT, automated and Goldmann perimeters, slit lamp, American Optical Vectograph, and Howard Dolman.
1.1.6 The contractor shall have knowledge and experience with ophthalmic surgical procedures to include cataract surgery (phacoemulsification and extra-capsular methods), blepharoplasty, ocular muscle surgeries, chalazion and eyelid lesion excisions, ptosis repair, nasolacrimal duct probing, ocular and peri-ocular laser procedures, trabeculectomy, eyelid laceration repairs, and dacryocystorhinostomy.
1.2 Tasks. The contractor shall:
1.2.1 Assist in patient evaluations, including ACS referrals, Flying Class I applicants, Medical Flight Screening applicants and subjects participating in branch-related studies.
1.2.2 Support all aspects of clinical exams including: ophthalmic histories; measurement of visual acuity, color vision, contrast sensitivity, corneal and retinal imaging, stereopsis, visual fields, tonometry, keratometry; and fitting spectacles. This requires
1.2.3 Perform basic instrument maintenance.
1.2.4 Administer medications to the eye, be knowledgeable of ophthalmic drugs, and apply a proper eye patch. The contractor shall practice aseptic techniques and keep offices and equipment clean and follow infection control during these and all other practices.
1.2.5 Review patient medical records from previous exams and other pertinent data for provider’s reference during current exam and documents test results in outpatient electronic medical record in compliance with established protocols.
1.2.6 Organize, prepare and replenish patient exam rooms between encounters and maintain ophthalmic medications in a ready state in multiple treatment areas. The contractor will assist the Ophthalmologist or Optometrist in fitting spectacles, hard and soft contact lenses and be able to instruct patients on the proper insertion, removal, cleaning, as required.
1.2.7 Perform all duties required for the ophthalmic medical and non-medical equipment and supplies within the section.
1.2.8 Support associated Ophthalmologists and Optometrists in research protocols including: acquisition of ophthalmic and optometric measurements such as evaluation of visual performance with optical devices, contact lenses, and night vision goggles.
1.2.9 Schedule appointments with other departments and outside medical facilities.
1.2.10 Receive and interpret communications, publications, and directives; administratively support Aeromedical Ophthalmology, send and receive faxes, answer the telephone, and prepare correspondence as necessary. The contractor may be assigned additional duties to order prescription medications/contact lens solutions, conduct inventories, and dispose of such accordingly.
1.2.11 Perform as medical and surgical assistant to the ACS ophthalmologists while at the local military hospital (MTF) in the eye clinics and all surgical or procedure suites. The contractor shall maintain sterile fields while performing procedures with aseptic techniques.
