Thank you @duvet_days for reminding us that breasts have a real and very important purpose! Read on to learn about breast anatomy and what all the different parts of our breasts do! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Our milk ducts are intricate and life giving network of channels nestled among fat cells and glandular tissue. These milk ducts branch off near our chest wall and are called ductules which have small cluster of sacs called alveoli. A cluster of alveoli are called lobule and a cluster of lobules are called lobe.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The axillary lymph nodes help fight infection in our bodies by filtering lymph fluid from your breasts.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FATTY TISSUE⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fat tissue surrounds the ducts and lobules.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Produces milk during pregnancy and breastfeeding.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
FIBROUS TISSUE⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This tissue helps support your breasts and is what makes them feel firm.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
MILK DUCTS⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The milk ducts carry milk from the lobules to your nipple during breastfeeding.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

New Clear C-Section Drapes Give Moms a Whole New Birthing Experience

“Clear drapes help the mother feel like she is part of the birthing process,” Abney told Parents. “She can see her baby before it is taken to the warmer. She can see the baby when everyone else does, the moment the baby is born. She can match the sound of the baby’s cries while watching the quiver of the baby’s little chin.” Moms can get a whole new point of view on birth.

Our 2020 5-week HypnoBirthing series calendar is up! All classes take place at The Body in Balance Center in Alexandria, Virginia from 6:30pm-9pm! Visit us at to learn more and register!

3 Moms with Post-Birth PTSD Share Their Stories

TW: 3 Accounts of traumatic birth experiences and postpartum PTSD.
"Why, I wondered, am I so easy to dismiss?

Although my experience felt alienating, I am far from alone. Around a third of women report having had a traumatic birth experience, whether physically, emotionally, or both. About 9%, like me, will develop postnatal PTSD (also known as postpartum PTSD)....Different from both postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety, postpartum PTSD can involve anxiety, panic attacks, a sense of detachment or dissociation, hypervigilance, nightmares, flashbacks, and intrusive memories of the traumatic event — as Heidi McBain, a therapist with a perinatal mental health certification, explains to SheKnows. She adds that symptoms of postpartum PTSD can include “reliving the trauma in [one’s] mind over and over again, sleep changes, nightmares, heightened anxiety, and hyperfocusing on the trauma.”

Some women experience it because their expectations don’t match reality or a birth plan falls apart. For others, McBain explains, PTSD can be caused by a “near-death experience for mom or baby during birth,” a baby going into the NICU, the physical pain of birth, or unexpected severe injuries or health conditions that arise during labor or in the postpartum period. And while anyone can develop postnatal PTSD, women with a history of sexual abuse or a prior traumatic birth experience are more at risk." When I remember giving birth to my daughter, my primary memory is feeling an overwhelming sense of love for her. But following that, all too closely, I remember mostly fear and shame. I’d planned …

It can be extremely difficult to make decisions or stand firm in your birth plan with doctors, midwives, nurses, and other caregivers rapid firing information at you- especially if your situation is emergent. A birth doula can help you sort through medical terminology do you have a clear understand what is happening. They can also help you make evidence based decisions that are the best for you and your baby, and empower you to advocate for yourself if you need it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thanks @babymoonbirthing for reminding all of us that we have a right to make decisions for our body, our baby, and our birth! ⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I Was Not Prepared for My First Birth: 15 Things I Wish I Had Known - Mothering

"So, can you prepare yourself? Can you be ready? Don’t despair; none of us can ever be fully prepared, but that’s the beauty of birth and mothering. We don’t have to be. We do the best we can, giving our bodies the opportunity to prove itself the champions that they are, and somehow, magically, you and that baby take this world on together like nobody’s business." Nine months should be enough time to prepare for birth, but it’s not. These ideas will help you accept that you’ll never really be totally prepared.

Experts Say A Colicky Baby Can Really Impact Your Mental Health — Here's How To Cope

"Anytime a baby cries, it’s stressful. When your baby cries for hours at a time and you can’t seem to comfort them, it can begin to seriously wear on your well-being. How a colicky baby affects your mental health can depend on your support network, ability to get counseling, and more. But at the end of the day, parents of colicky babies in any situation can practice self-care and coping strategies to help get them through."
A postpartum doula can be an instrumental part of your coping strategies when you have a colicky baby. They can hold the baby while you take some time away- a shower, a cup of coffee, anything that you can do to help recharge. Anytime a baby cries, it’s stressful.
