Teaching Black women to be doulas to 'Save Black Lives'

"Mejia-Greene says Black women are looked down upon in hospital rooms. Oftentimes, she says, this leads her to hold conversations with pregnant moms that center less on baby names and more about survival.

“It’s supposed to be so beautiful. ‘I’m going in with my client, we’re leaving, we’re going to have a healthy baby. Everything’s going to be fine,’” says Mejia-Greene. “We don’t get to think like that.”

phillytrib.com NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Over two dozen women gathered in late winter inside a large, open room at the Nashville Sudbury School. They were there to become doulas — trained birth

Everyone deserves a birth where they are safe, empowered, respected, and heard. Black women die at a rate 3-4 times that of White women, and Black babies at 2x the rate of White babies. No woman should enter a hospital to have a baby and be worried that they or their baby will be injured or die because of the color of their skin. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

🤰🏾 Midwives in the Antebellum South were more than baby catchers–they were spiritual healers, gardeners, cooks, massage therapists, caretakers, and family counselors.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Despite the growing field of gynecology, whenever possible, enslaved women relied on one another in childbirth and other health matters, putting faith into the wisdom of elder women and trusting their knowledge of their bodies.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Enslaved women were allowed to train as plantation nurses and midwives under older experienced women because of the fact that they then yielded especially high profits for their enslavers by serving the local white community. But, just as white male doctors used medical journals to construct ideas of racial inferiority, they also served to disempower Black midwives. Shaping narrative and dominant thought by referring to these wise women as "old ignorant Negro midwives."⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The 1921 Sheppard-Towner Act (STA) of Congress systematically eradicated the Black midwife. In a stated effort to decrease infant mortality—which was caused by the effects of poverty and racism; not a lack of knowledge or training in midwives—the STA required licensure of midwives and emphasized birth as a medical process, dismissing midwifery traditions.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Before the STA, nearly half of all US births were attended by midwives or other lay caretakers, with a higher percentage in the south, especially among Black communities. By 1930 midwife-attended births declined to 15% nationwide.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While generally touted as successful many did not benefit from the STA. White infant mortality rates reduced with every facet of the Act—spending on health and sanitation, home visits from nurses and health care centers, etc.— but there were ZERO statistically significant reductions for non-white infant mortality. Being Antiracist

Birth is changed because of racism.

This is a really good article that literally explains step by step things that we can do to become anti-racist. I encourage you to read and implement and if you have children use these tactics with them. Start from the very beginning to raise people that are anti-racist.

"In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist....
Why do you want to be antiracist? Considering the breadth and depth of racism, committing to being antiracist may feel overwhelming yet small choices made daily can add up to big changes. Reflect on choices you make in your daily life (i.e., who you build relationships with, what media you follow, where you shop). How do these choices reflect being antiracist?"

**New coronavirus and breastfeeding research**
Milk from breastfeeding mothers, who have recovered from COVID-19, *may contain antibodies to the novel coronavirus.* In a preliminary report, 15 human milk samples obtained from donors previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 and 10 negative control samples were tested for a variety of antibody activity. The data indicate that there is strong SARS-CoV-2 immune response in the majority of human milk samples collected after infection. Study leader, Rebecca Powell of The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, was quoted by Reuters, “Nursing mothers who are infected with the novel coronavirus should continue to breastfeed throughout their COVID-19 illness and beyond, because (other researchers) have shown transmission does not occur via milk, and we have determined that antibodies are almost certainly there, and may protect their babies from infection.” Her team’s report, posted on 5/8/20 on the preprint server medRxiv, has not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a medical journal. Many of our doulas are trained in @spinningbabies techniques to use during pregnancy and labor! Check out this post to learn more about the Open Knee-Chest. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Open Knee-Chest⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Would you like to help the labor start over and go smoother? The Open-Knee-Chest helps back the baby out of the pelvic brim and start again in a better position.⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In pregnancy? Open-Knee-Chest is only for breech babies.⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In labor? Open-Knee-Chest is for babies not coming into the pelvis flexed and in good position.⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When a head-down baby is still floating (-4 or -3 Station) doing this correctly risks turning baby to the breech position.⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When not to do an Open-Knee-Chest:⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1) Don’t do this when the head down baby is NOT engaged and floating!⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2) Don’t do this or any other inversions for women at risk of stroke, who have high blood pressure which warrants medical supervision.⁣⁣⁣⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Please carefully read instructions and safety tips at SpinningBabies.com/learn-more/techniques/⁣⁣"⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
