While the statistics & numbers are staggering, we remain committed to standing on MIDDLE GROUND for the children who are facing extreme hunger & malnutrition.

Our inpatient center remains to be one of the only operating malnutrition clinics in the greater Port-au-Prince area, making our services more important than ever.

Our biggest need right now is to see our support base grow so that we can continue operating all of our programs. No donation is too small in the fight against malnutrition; even $10/month provides a children with lab work or $20/month provides a can of formula.

By joining the COALITION, you are linking arms with us in our fight against malnutrition; learn more here ➡ https://middlegroundhaiti.org/the-coalition-2025/

keeping the babies in their mamas' arms is the heartbeat to all that we do ––

we not only want to see childhood malnutrition eradicated, but we want to see families strengthened & sustained

we operate our inpatient center to ensure children have access to care as they fight to overcome malnutrition

but, we also operate wrap-around programs to provide families access to continued support for long-term success

pictured here is little ROBENSLEY in his mama's arms; he's the youngest of four & was admitted for severe Kwashiorkor

he spent 62 days inpatient, making a full recovery & was able to return home to his family! he'll now enter our follow-up program for continued support

by supporting MIDDLE GROUND, you're supporting SO much –– we need an army of supporters to rally around us more than ever, consider joining the COALITION today

Four months ago, we received new medical equipment at our facility and we sure have put them to work!

✨ The vitals monitoring machines have run for 1,952 hours
✨ The oxygen concentrators have run for 992 hours

Pictured here is sweet BETHSAELLE, a 3-year-old, who spent 36 days inpatient. She was diagnosed with severe kwashiorkor upon admission, but made a full recovery, gaining 3 pounds by the time she was discharged.

We are thankful for the donors who made it possible for us to receive this new equipment & even more thankful for the children who have made a full recovery in our center!

As one of the only open & operating malnutrition centers in all of Port-au-Prince right now, we pray our center is not only a place of healing, but a place of refuge & security from all the unrest taking place on the streets.

May the babies' malnourished bodies not only heal, but may the caregivers find rest. May HOPE be restored in their lives as they're cared for.

Darkness may seem to be reigning over Haiti, but we pray MIDDLE GROUND is a beacon of hope - a light on a hilltop - during this trying season.

Your continued support allows us to be just that // thank you for standing with us

🎉 This week, we’re celebrating a meaningful milestone we reached just last week:

✨ 1,000 children officially served through our programs! ✨

One of our established programs is the FORMULA Program—an extension of our inpatient services that has provided life-saving nutritional support to 80 children since 2016.

Last week, we welcomed a set of twins into the program: Stanayly and Stanaelle, six-month-olds who spent 48 days in our inpatient center. Their family has lost everything due to the violence and ongoing attacks in Kenscoff. With no home to return to, they’ll be living in a crowded shelter with extended family, where food is hard to find.

Their mother, doing her best under unimaginable stress, isn’t able to produce enough breast milk for both babies. But thanks to the FORMULA program, we can step in to help.

💛 It costs just $100/month to support one baby in the program—ensuring they receive the nutrition they need to survive and thrive 💛

If you're interested in sponsoring these twins or learning more about how to help, we’d love to connect with you. Your support will truly make all the difference in their lives!

Last week, our malnutrition programs crossed a milestone we never imagined when we first opened our doors in 2016:
Over 1,000 children have now been served through our programs!

While this moment feels like something that should be celebrated, we carry it with heavy hearts. This number — 1,000 — is not just a statistic. It represents the urgent and heartbreaking reality of childhood malnutrition in Haiti. Nearly half of the population is facing extreme hunger, including over 400,000 children. Behind every number is a name, a story, and a life worth fighting for — like Fednaelle, pictured here, who was inpatient with us for 33 days earlier this year.

We dream of a future where no child knows hunger pains. But until that day comes, we stand firm on Middle Ground, committed to doing everything we can to rewrite futures — one child at a time.

So far, we have:

💚 Served 1,000 children through our programs

💜Celebrated 780 graduations from our inpatient, outpatient, and formula programs

🖤Mourned 51 precious lives lost — 46 in inpatient care and 5 in our formula program

We honor each of those children, both the ones who recovered and those who did not, by continuing this work with deep love and renewed resolve.

As you read this, 12 children are currently receiving life-saving care at our center, but our morning report from on the ground is that several children are outside, waiting for screening. The number will likely change by the end of the day. And that's the thing about our work, every day has the potential to hold so much grief and horror, while also holding hope and healing.
We remain open against all odds — in the midst of gang violence, political instability, and ongoing crisis in the streets of Port-au-Prince. These children’s early memories will include fear and trauma, but we pray their days at Middle Ground are filled with healing, refuge, and hope.

This milestone is not ours alone — it's yours too. Thank you for believing in this mission, for standing with us, and for giving these children a fighting chance.

When MECAELLA was admitted to our program at just 22 months old, he weighed only 17 pounds, 6 ounces — and his case of kwashiorkor was one of the more extreme cases we’ve seen. The swelling (edema) was so severe that his eyes were nearly swollen shut.

The candid photos shown here were taken just 30 days into treatment — look at the difference in his eyes!

He spent 52 days inpatient with us, even celebrating his second birthday while in our care. During that time, he consumed 74 packets of mamba, helping him gain over four healthy pounds.

Upon his graduation, he returned home to his mother to his three siblings — looking like a completely new child! He is now enrolled in our follow-up program for continued support.

Your support makes all the difference for children like Mecaella. Because of you, we can continue to provide life-saving care for the littles facing the most severe forms of malnutrition in Haiti.

happy Friday ✨

Friday's are a busy day at Middle Ground as many families come in for follow-up appointments. Not only are the children seen for a routine assessment, but they are also served a hot meal & drink.

As you can see here, Mayflorencia is enjoying every last drop! She's been in our programs since 2022 after recovering from marasmus malnutrition as a 16 month old.

It's a joy to continue watching her grow 💖

So far this year, we have served 947 children through our follow-up Friday clinics!

It has now been seven months since the original attacks devastated Kenscoff, Haiti (a community located just above Middle Ground, further into the mountains). At Middle Ground, we knew these events would impact the families we serve, but in those early days, it was impossible to know just how much, or how many would be affected. As the months pass, we continue hearing from more people, learning how greatly so many people were impacted.

One of the families most deeply impacted is the Cius family, who first came to Middle Ground in October 2023. At that time, the four older siblings were severely malnourished (the baby, Kattiana, was breastfeeding and quite healthy) and were admitted for inpatient care. After 43 days, they had made a full recovery and were able to return home. Throughout 2024, they received ongoing support from our team through our follow-up program.

But, in January 2025, everything changed. The violence forced them to flee their home. In the chaos, they lost everything—their belongings, their safety, and their ability to access food. In the months that followed, their health deteriorated yet again. Due to closed roads and imminent danger, they were unable to reach Middle Ground for months. In mid-August, they finally found a safe way to reach our center. All FIVE siblings were suffering from malnutrition. They were all immediately readmitted to our inpatient care program.

❤ Lucianie (11 years old, the oldest) weighed only 41 pounds, the weight of a healthy 5-year-old, but gained 3 pounds during her stay!

💛 Shilo (9 years old) is actually bigger than his older sister, but still very small for his age. He gained over 3 pounds!

💚 Gesna (7 years old) had the biggest transformation, gaining over 5 pounds!

💙 Wisner (5 years old) gained 2 healthy pounds

💜 Kattiana (2.5 years old) spent 32 days in inpatient care and gained almost 2 pounds

The four older children were inpatient for 21 days; Kattiana spent an extra 11 days inpatient. In total, they gained over 16 pounds in less than one month and consumed 320 packets of Mamba!

The CIUS family has truly endured more than most of us can imagine. They are still without a safe place to stay, unable to return to their home due to continued gang presence in the area. But thanks to your support, they do have a place where they can continue coming to for continued care and support.

We are deeply grateful to walk alongside this family and equally grateful for YOU as you choose to stand on MIDDLE GROUND with us and make these stories of recovery possible.

There is still a long road ahead as families continue to seek safety & shelter. We know there is great possibility in more families like the Cius family who will need to be readmitted, because the circumstances keep food & health out of reach for so many. We remain committed in our mission to serve and care for those who reach our gates. We can't do it without you!

The best way to support our programs is by joining THE COALITION.
Any dollar amount makes a difference, but having a committed group of individuals, giving consistently each month, is what allows us to plan ahead & have the resources we need to keep everything running.

Yesterday we shared graphics explaining the difference between KWASHIORKOR and MARASMUS malnutrition - the two main types of diagnoses made at Middle Ground, both with distinguishing symptoms.

From brittle hair and sunken faces to swollen feet and distended bellies, malnutrition causes not just immediate visible suffering, but also serious long-term damage if not treated promptly and effectively.

The long-term effects of malnutrition in children are profound and often irreversible, especially during the critical early years of development. These can include:

• Stunted growth – Children may never reach their full height or physical potential.
• Cognitive delays – Malnutrition affects brain development, leading to difficulties in learning, memory, and attention.
• Weakened immune systems – Malnourished children are far more vulnerable to infections and diseases.
• Chronic illness – Long-term deficiencies can contribute to heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues later in life.
• Reduced economic opportunities – The impacts on physical and mental development can limit educational and job prospects in adulthood.

At Middle Ground, our goal is not just to treat the symptoms of malnutrition, but to break the cycle completely, giving every child the chance to grow, learn, and thrive well into their childhood. Your support makes their immediate recovery and long-term success possible!
