meet KETURA ๐Ÿ’•

a sweet babe that was admitted for Marasmus malnutrition last year

she was 4-months-old when admitted, weighing a mere 6 pounds. she spent 32 days inpatient and gained just over 2 pounds in that time.

she was seen in the follow-up program a handful of times, but was re-admitted in January after losing her father to gang violence, which resulted in a rapid decline in health for both babe & mom.

Ketura spent another 85 days inpatient from January - April; in that time she gained so much strength, plus another SIX pounds!! Her discharge weight was 15 lbs. 8 oz!

Ketura's recovery is a great example as to why our follow-up program is essential, allowing us to keep a close eye on those in the most vulnerable situations. Our staff report so many families we serve having lost loved ones to gang violence. Many families remain displaced, living in constant fear, and enduring much trauma.

Middle Ground remains a beacon of hope & refuge for so many reasons than just malnutrition care. THANK YOU for standing on MIDDLE GROUND with us as we strive to continue being a light in the darkness.

We are grateful for recent donations that allowed us to update our electrical system + add more solar panels to our rooftop!

As we strive to provide critical care to malnourished children, having reliable electricity to operate our medical equipment is a non-negotiable. In recent months, our batteries were not keeping up with the demands and we were running our diesel generator to keep the lights on. With the update of our system this past month, we have not had to turn on the generator once!!

This update will make our center more sustainable in so many ways + allow us to care for even more children.

A special thank you to the ARC congregation in Luverne, MN for their generous donations that made this update possible.

MEET EVENS ๐Ÿ’›

He was one of ELEVEN children who graduated from our inpatient center in April. Admitted at 2.5 years old, he weighed just 19 pounds and was diagnosed with marasmus malnutrition.

After 29 days inpatient, he had gained well over 6 pounds, making a full recovery. He will now enter our follow-up program for continued support.

Thank you for standing on MIDDLE GROUND with us & making transformations like Evens's possible.

This month's e-mail features Nadia, our laundry lady, who is responsible for all the laundry needs at the inpatient center.

Nadia sees the work being done at MG as a painkiller, bringing relief to those living in deep poverty without the means to survive. During her time at MG, she has witnessed many miracles and powerful moments that stand as a testimony to the value of MG's work.

MEET STANAYLY & STANAELLE
This set of twins were admitted in July 2025 for severe kwashiorkor malnutrition. Upon admission, they were 4-months-old and weighed 8 lbs, 4 oz and 7 lbs, 11 oz.

They were inpatient for 48 days, and in that time, they gained over 9 collective pounds! After their inpatient graduation, they were transferred to the formula program as mom was unable to breastfeed.

Before coming to Middle Ground, the family had fled from their home due to gangs attacking their village. The twinsโ€™ young mother, Pivoina, lost her husband and several close family members during the attacks. She fled to a shelter, but was unable to access proper nutrition and basic hygiene, causing the twins and mom to become malnourished. The continued support of our follow-up program allowed the family to receive food kits, medications, formula, and a water filter. It was with great joy to see the twins graduate from the formula program last month (March 2026). They now weigh 18 lbs, 14 oz and 15 lbs, 14 oz! (shown in the 2nd photo)

Last year, we received a grant from The Rotary Club in Ann Arbor, MI, which provided us with resources that were a life-line to vulnerable, displaced families. We are grateful for the recoveries made while inpatient, but we are even more grateful that those recoveries remain to be lasting due to the effort and resources provided in our follow-up programs.

THANK YOU to the Rotary Club & thank you to all the individuals who continue to stand on MIDDLE GROUND with us in our fight against malnutrition.

There are some intake photos that just hit differently,
Elie's was one of those.

You can almost feel the pain & terror he is holding when looking into his eyes.

Elie was admitted into our care just four months ago. He was 18-months-old, weighed 14 lbs, 1 oz, and was diagnosed with kwashiorkor malnutrition.

He spent 78 days inpatient, which is quite longer than an average stay.

Elie is now 2 months post graduation and is being seen in our follow-up program,
which is where the 2nd photo comes from.

He's gained an additional 2 pounds since graduating & is on a road to lasting recovery thanks to the resources in our follow-up program.

Your support of MIDDLE GROUND provides recovery, refuge, and relief to the sweetest of babes. May the overwhelming need never paralyze us to act & respond. Elie's life is forever changed thanks to your obedient actions.
