This first class, full-service grocery store will be located on the northern portion of the block bounded by St. Asaph Street, Madison Street and Pitt Street and will provide fresh, high-quality foods, a full service pharmacy and in a convenient neighborhood location. The project will also include approximately 175 residential apartments. Buchanan Partners is the developer of the project and has been working with City staff and the community over the past several months on the design and layout of the project. During this time Buchanan Partners has held over 12 community meetings with adjacent property owners, community associations and residents. On May 11, 2011, the Urban Design Advisory Committee recommended approval of the project provided that the retail loading dock is located on St. The proposed layout of the project accommodates this request. The City has accepted the formal development applications and plans for the project and has scheduled the necessary Planning Commission and City Council public hearings for June 2011. If you would like to see our plans for the development please check out the Photos section of our page. The Planning Commission public hearing will be held at 7:30pm on Tuesday, June 7th at City Hall (301 King Street, Alexandria, Virginia). The City Council public hearing is currently scheduled for Saturday, June 25th, beginning at 9:30am. That meeting is also at City Hall. At both meetings, the City staff will present their recommendation for the project along with development approval conditions. After the staff presentation, the Planning Commission and City Council will hold a public hearing where the public will be provided an opportunity to comment on the project. We hope that you will considering supporting this project as a full-service grocery story will bring several benefits for the residents of Old Town North. The store will create 150 new local jobs and contribute approximately $1 million in net new tax revenue to the City of Alexandria. It is just what our City needs in these challenging economic times. We anticipate that the majority of customers live within one mile of the store – making it convenient for Old Town North’s residents and those who enjoy walking and biking. We are also excited that it will house a pharmacy within the store, adding convenience for neighbors who also need to have prescriptions filled. The redevelopment of the existing vacant and obsolete buildings will be enhanced by the architecture of long time Alexandria architecture firm Rust Orling Architects. The project will include improved streetscape and outdoor seating areas that will create a unique place for residents to congregate. The new Harris Teeter store adds an important service and a boost to the economy. We hope you agree and will consider joining us at the meetings on June 7th and June 25th to learn more about the proposed Harris Teeter for Old Town North and become part of making it happen.
