Yesterday members of the Iowa State Police Association Board of Directors presented the Purple Heart award to Lara Cram, the wife of Algona Police Department Officer Kevin Cram E.O.W. 09-13-2023

On September 13, 2023, at approximately 7:53 p.m., Algona Police Officer Kevin Cram was on patrol duty in the City of Algona when he was made aware of an active arrest warrant for a suspect. The arrest warrant was for Harassment through Palo Alto County, Iowa.
Officer Cram knew a possible location for the suspect and headed to that area. Officer Cram was in the 1100 block of S. Minnesota Street in Algona when he observed the suspect and made contact with him. Officer Cram told the suspect he was going to be placed under arrest, and the suspect shot Officer Cram. Officer Cram was located by other officers and EMS, and taken to the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona where he was later pronounced deceased.

Later that same night the suspect was located and arrested near Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. In July of 2024 the suspect was convicted of Murder 1st degree and sentenced to life in prison.

Officer Kevin Cram joined the Algona Police Department as a Patrol Officer in 2015, having previously served as a Reserve Officer with the department from 2010 to 2013. He also served as an officer with the Nora Springs Police Department from 2012 to 2015. Kevin graduated in the top five of his class from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in 2013.

Officer Cram always wanted to help others and make a difference in his community. He was an excellent son, husband, father, officer and friend to many.
