Helping your elderly loved ones stay safe during the pandemic isn't always easy, particularly when they live alone or far away. It becomes even more complex when memory issues are involved and the risk of infection varies from month to month. Here are a few questions that can start conversations with mom and dad and help keep them as safe as possible: How was your day/week? This question can shed light on how careful they're being day-to-day. When is your next doctor's appointment? This can identify which appointments to keep versus reschedule and attend in person versus telehealth. Encourage them to ask their PCP if they are uncertain. How are your spirits? How can I help? The road to staying safe is difficult, especially for those who are most vulnerable and isolated. Sometimes the smallest of things can brighten someone's day. We're in this together and we'll get through it together!

Did you know that Home Care Assistance takes a unique approach to caregiving called the Balanced Care Method? BCM is based on studies of elders in Okinawa, Japan, who often live to be 100 or older with excellent health. Researchers found that two-thirds of longevity is due to specific lifestyle factors, including healthy diet, physical activity, cognitive engagement, social ties and calmness/purpose. Our caregivers incorporate all these components when working with clients to help them have the longest and healthiest life possible. It's one of the many things that sets us apart from your average care providers.

Sixty and Me recently shared an article based on a study they conducted about dealing with loneliness after 50. They found a 12% increase in loneliness from their 2019 survey, that 78% of people felt that the pandemic and social restrictions amplified their feelings of loneliness, and that 68% of these people said that exercise and getting outdoors is their #1 way to tackle these feelings.
sixtyandme.com It is clear from this year’s results that little has changed and loneliness is still a big issue for the Sixty and Me community.
It may not seem obvious to many, but our clients get it: 2020 is truly a year to celebrate. Yes, it was challenging. For most of our clients, staying safe was no easy feat. And yet despite all the many obstacles, together we made it. We're thankful to our highly skilled and dedicated caregivers who helped protect our clients every day so we could all reach this milestone. So let's celebrate! And look to the New Year with renewed hope for better days ahead.
Recognizing and honoring birthdays is so important, especially in times of loneliness or social isolation. Whether it's a milestone that ends in a "0" or "5" or the accomplishment of making it through a particularly challenging year, birthdays deserve to be celebrated. Our caregivers make sure that each of our clients feel extra special at these moments no matter who can be there to celebrate. #HCAcares
Happy Holidays from the Home Care Assistance of McKinney & Allen team!
Yes the holidays this year probably look a little different from what we're used to. But for many clients, age brings the perspective that this is just one holiday in a lifetime of celebrations. So whether you are able to celebrate with family and friends or stay tucked away in cozy safety celebrating from afar, our wish is that you find joy in whatever you do this season. And extra thanks to our caregivers for all the baking, tree trimming, wrapping and other special touches that are making the holidays a little brighter for our clients. We’re grateful for all things, big and small, you do every day! #caregiving #homecare
We are happy to know that in situations like a transition from a hospital back home, we have been able to help. A client’s daughter expressed her feelings about her mom’s transition and said that our caregivers were there for as long as she needed, that they knew how to handle the situation perfectly, and that she wouldn’t hesitate to reach out again. Thank you Gab, for letting us know how we helped create a positive outcome with your mother’s transition.
