Follow @thebellemethod for her inquiry into what people mean by “Natural” birth and what we can do as fellow women to change this verbiage. I myself prefer to use “medicated” “unmedicated” “vaginal birth” “cesarean birth” “hospital birth” “home birth” “birth center birth” “YOUR BIRTH” because these words are factual and carry no stigma. To me, it’s important to support women in their decisions and in their individual experiences no matter which category these experiences fit into. Thank you, Belle, for sharing.

THE PROBLEM WITH “NATURAL BIRTH”
You had SO much to say on this topic. 60% of you said you dislike the term “natural birth”. Here are just a few of the MANY responses I got to the story poll.
Full disclosure: I dislike the term, and I have had two empowering unmedicated vaginal deliveries.
I dislike it as much as I would dislike someone asking me if we conceived “naturally” (We did IVF).
I think the term “natural birth” is unclear and often causes feelings of inadequacy, comparison and judgment for so many women whose births didn’t go as planned.
Why can’t we just say VAGINAL birth?
What does “natural” even imply? Without an epidural? Vaginally? Without instrument assistance? In a forest next to a baby deer? 🌳🦌
Some people may comment here and say “people are too sensitive”.
But I know that language holds immense power. We can choose to communicate with empathy, or we can use words that foster further division and competition. I think there’s enough judgment in the mom world as it is.
I hope this opens up a productive conversation. ❤️

*Dilation Predicts Nothing*
@mamastefit serving up some truth!
#Repost @mamastefit with @make_repost
Here’s your daily PSA!
Dilation does not predict when you will go into labor!
Your cervix is not a crystal ball; you could be 1cm and go into labor that day or 5cm and go into labor in a few weeks.
Effacement *may* be more of a predictor of labor onset, but not necessarily either!
So, if you are getting cervical checks during pregnancy and your provider states you haven’t made change between your appointments, and states that you should get an induction bc you’re never going to go into labor. Nod your head and say “cool, I’m not in labor, so I don’t expect to make any cervical change. Also, dilation does not predict labor onset.”
Moral of this story? Your dilation during pregnancy does not predict when you’ll go into labor.

Could your newborn be cluster feeding?
#Repost @midwifemarley with @make_repost
Cluster feeding is one of the reasons many women give up breastfeeding. They mistakenly think the baby is feeding lots and being fussy because they don't have enough milk.
Cluster feeding is when the baby feeds extremely frequently due to a growth spurt. They feed often to send a signal to the brain through the breasts to make more milk. During cluster feeding, babies will cry and root around a lot looking for the breast.
These growth spurts in babies usually happen at around 7-10 days of age, 2-3 weeks, 3-4 weeks, 3 months, 4 months, 6 months and 9 months of age. They can last for a few days before settling.
My daughter went through plenty of growth spurts and its draining! She fed lots but I knew I had enough milk for her even though she always seems hungry. She had plenty of wet and dirty nappies and her growth was great.
During these cluster feeding growth spurts, be sure to keep hydrated and have snacks handy as you might get hungry! It usually only lasts for a couple of days before they relax and give you your body a bit of a break between feeding 😊
Babies don't just cluster feed when going through growth spurts, they can also do this when they are feeling unwell or unsettled in a new environment.

Why get a postpartum Doula? Here’s why!
#Repost @michaelafinkdoula with @make_repost
Do you know what a #postpartumdoula is?🙌🏻🗣
A postpartum doula is someone who supports families as they transition into life with a new baby.
Postpartum doulas are trained in understanding what you and your baby needs.
We teach soothing techniques, how to feed (breast or bottle), and we are trained to know normal infant behavior.
We truly support the family as a whole and always keep families best interest at heart while offering non-judgmental care. Have you seen my last silly reel??😂👇🏻
As your PPD, I want to support you and your family however I can. Sometimes that means staying for overnights, crawling in the bed to listen to you, prepping bottles for the day, or teaching you newborn care.
Whatever kind of support you need, your postpartum doula is here for you.
Follow @michaelafinkdoula for newborn education & tips on having a new baby!!
Doulas, Feel free to choose whichever template you like best & share! Tag me so I can give you a S/O!💛💕
It is said that women in labor leave their bodies. . . they travel to the stars to collect the souls of their babies, and return to this world together. 💫

I am currently accepting Birth Doula & Sibling Doula clients for late January and later in Upstate, SC 🤗

Let's hear it for revolutionary childbirth planning; making birth fully supported again!
"Congress should designate birth doula services as a mandated Medicaid benefit for pregnant women based on evidence that doula support is a cost-effective strategy to improve birth outcomes of women and babies...
CMS should develop a clear, standardized pathway for establishing reimbursement for doula services, including prenatal and postpartum visits and continuous labor support, in all state Medicaid agencies and Medicaid managed care plans...
State Medicaid agencies should take advantage of the recent revision of the Preventive Services Rule, 42 CFR §440.130(c), to amend their state plans to cover doula support...
Managed care organizations and other private insurance plans as well as relevant innovative payment and delivery systems with options for enhanced benefits should include support by a trained doula as a covered service."
#DoulasAreAnEssential #ItsInTheScience #MaternalInfantBonding #EmotionalSupport #CareForTheNextGeneration #MotheringTheMother
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov Continuous labor support by a trained doula has proven benefits and is recognized as an effective strategy to improve maternal and infant health, enhance engagement and satisfaction with maternity care, and reduce spending. Community-based doula programs ...
Why did I choose to become a Doula? Because I have a strong passion for helping women feel comfortable, empowered and at peace in their own bodies. Since middle school I knew I wanted to be an OBGYN and although I've changed to nursing, womens health is the goal because you deserve all the things!

Hear Me Out--I have this discussion with my clients all the time:
Your birth team is super important. Every person on your team should be working FOR you, not just with you. We need to scoot away from the idea that whatever our doctors or nurses say, goes because then sometimes our requests can be ignored.
If you are planning a birth, just know that there are so many people out there that are capable and believe in supporting you, in what is right FOR YOU, not just telling you what is typical in the birthing community.
Here is an awesome video of @thebellemethod and the Pelvic Health Physiotherapist on her Birth & Postpartum Team, going through some individualized practices to show you one variation of normal postpartum healing.

How do you know if a move is “safe” for your core?
If you see doming in your core (I demo here!) it’s a sign you need to improve your deep core muscle recruitment.
My friend & mentor Dr Sinéad Dufour, PhD and Pelvic Health Physiotherapist walks me through some tests to determine core function. I’m 3.5 weeks postpartum here!
Watch as I do the same move twice - the first time I do it poorly and you see doming; the second time I add my deep core breathing (called “hug the baby breath” in pregnancy) and the doming goes away. ✨
This is why learning how to properly BREATHE and recruit your deep core is the primary skill we teach in all our Bump Method pre & postnatal classes! 🙌. Questions? Just ask! July/August virtual classes are open for registration! .

Due dates! We mark that date in our diary and imprint it in our brains like we have never marked anything before!! Then we start to countdown like we are doing hard time 😂
Only a small percentage of babies are actually born on their due dates though. I think the figure is around 4%
For women who go into labour naturally, around 64% of babies are born between 39 weeks and 41+6 weeks.
13% are born in the 38th week
6% in the 37th week
3% in the 36th week
2% at 42 weeks and over.
The remaining 12% are babies that are born preterm earlier than 36 weeks.
So basically you are more likely to go into labour around your due date but not on it. I think we should start calling it a due 'window' instead!
Did you give birth on or near your due date or were you way off?
