Brain Balance Centers

We are an after school program that helps children with learning, behavioral and/or social struggles by stimulating the weaker hemisphere of their brain.

The Brain Balance Program® brings hope to families of children who suffer with behavioral, academic, and social challenges. Our specialized achievement centers offer a drug-free, whole-child approach to address the underlying issues in many of the behavioral, developmental, and learning disorders that plague so many children today. For over a decade, the Brain Balance Program has helped thousands of kids struggling with ADHD, Learning Disorders, Dyslexia and many other neurobehavioral issues. They have become more focused and better behaved and have seen improvement in their academic performance, communication and social skills.

Mission: To make the Brain Balance Program® available to as many children as possible so that each child may reach his or her greatest physical, mental, social and academic potential.

Operating as usual

Candy is full of refined sugar, artificial dyes, and preservatives which may exacerbate hyperactivity and increase aggressive behavior. This can lead to meltdowns, sleep struggles, and learning distractions for days after Halloween! Non- candy toys are a great alternative, keeping Halloween a happy, healthy event for all.

Is your little one displaying any of these signs? Learning disorders may affect as many as 1 in 5 people in the United States and can not only inhibit a person’s ability to learn and communicate effectively, but can also directly impact a person’s self-esteem.

“As a special education teacher for the past 15 years it has been my passion to help educate students with learning differences and ADHD, but I’ve always known what I do in my classroom (although helpful) isn’t enough for my students. When my own child received an ADHD diagnosis my heart broke and I searched high and low for what more I can do as a teacher and a mother. I found Brain Balance! It is the answer to my prayers for my child. ”

Is your child too afraid to learn to drive? Go to the basement? Be around bugs? Fear is normal but too much fear can cause anxiety and can compromise a child’s happiness. Our brain is supposed to help us know when to be afraid and when it isn’t necessary. If you feel like your child’s fear is getting in the way of daily life, it could be a sign of underdevelopment in the brain. Many children with underdevelopments in the brain are retaining the Moro reflex, causing the brain to constantly send out signals of fear and panic. Addressing this reflex along with any underdeveloped pathways can lead to a calmer, happier life for your child.

Tip: Peppermint can have a calming effect on an anxious child. Sensory swings are a wonderful way to calm an anxious child.

Being aware of your child’s developmental milestones is very important as they help alert us to potential developmental issues. If we are aware of these early indicators, we can identify the concern and create a plan to address it.

Below is a developmental checklist for your 4-5 year old.
• Understands concepts of right and wrong
• Often indulges in make-believe
• Displays concern and sympathy
• Repeats words, phrases, syllables, and even sounds
• Uses the past tense correctly
• Names common objects in picture books

Roller skating and skateboarding provide a great aerobic workout. We know that gross motor activity is excellent for children developmentally, so grab your skates or your board and roll around the neighborhood or take a family trip to the nearest roller skating rink! Don’t forget the kneepads and helmets!

We all know Halloween candy contains lots of sugar, right? But how much is too much? At Brain Balance, we recommend no more than 20 grams of added sugar a day. That is the same as 5 sugar cubes, the amount in only 15 pieces of candy corn. Foods high in refined sugar can leave us feeling irritable and distracted. Try a candy-free Halloween with the tips and tricks below!

Is your child always jumping off things that are too high, or riding their bike too fast? When there are underdevelopments in the brain, our instincts may not kick in to tell us something is dangerous. Brain Balance helps build the systems that work to slow us down and hit pause on dangerous behavior. When these systems are improved, children have better self-control and awareness of the consequences of their actions.

Tip: Practice self-control by playing games like “Red light, Green light” and build body awareness by jumping on the trampoline or hula-hooping!

“Mitchell was diagnosed at 3 with Pdd-NOS not otherwise stated, now under the Autism Spectrum label. He is for ADD-inattentive Anxiety Disorder. We have tried everything, alternative medicine, diet changes, essential oils, OT, Speech therapy, mental health therapy, chiropractic care. Many things have helped his process but only so much and still so many things are difficult. Family get-togethers, going into the community without a meltdown. School avoidance, picky eater and rigid thinking to name a few. Since we started Brain Balance we have seen great changes in Mitchell. He is less stressed, more flexible and going to school and his electives. He is learning to try new things and not having overwhelming anxiety.”

She just isn’t a natural athlete, no big deal right? Think again! Struggling to catch and hit balls or constantly tripping on the field is often because the brain isn’t fully processing what we are seeing and feeling. Balance, visual perception, hand-eye coordination, and gross motor control are all important in not only athletics but daily life. When there are underdevelopments in the brain, these systems do not perform as well as they should. So a child struggling with sports skills may have underlying weaknesses that can affect many areas of life.

Tip: Practice balancing while tossing a ball. Start with a larger ball and slowly work towards a smaller ball.

• Screams, throws temper tantrums for little cause
• Vocabulary includes 150–300 words
• Understands two-step command
• Has a slight increase in attention span
• Outgrows separation anxiety

Strawberries and blueberries: A sweet treat that is actually healthy for us! So eat plenty. We do suggest that you try to get organic as much as you can. Both strawberries and blueberries are heavily sprayed with pesticides and top the “dirty dozen” chart.

Halloween is a great time to encourage creativity and imagination! For parents wanting to encourage healthy habits, however, Halloween can quickly become a sugar-fueled nightmare. To reduce how much sugar your child consumes, it is important to set boundaries. Try donating the candy to a local organization or buy back your child’s candy for a little spending money.

When children over 5 are still wetting the bed, it can be an indication that they are not feeling their body as well as they should. Retained primitive reflexes, especially the spinal gallant reflex, are a sign that there could be under developments in the brain. The Brain is responsible for interpreting our sense of physical feeling, including telling us when we need to use the bathroom. In a child with under developments in the brain, this sense isn’t as strong as it needs to be and can cause a sleeping child to not feel the need to use the bathroom until it is too late.

Tip: Wake your child before you go to bed and have them use the restroom. During the day, work on building body awareness by walking on a straight line, using a balance board, or hopping on one foot to help develop the brain!
