For Today’s #TipTuesday we would like to discuss the importance of sleep and why it aids in muscle recovery.

Proper sleep is incredibly necessary for everyone and even more so when you are suffering from an injury. The reason comes down to two things: hormones and blood flow.

When we are sleeping, our brain is not requiring as much blood flow as when we are awake. This in turn allows an increase in blood supply to the area in need. Meanwhile, the growth hormones are stimulating muscle repair and growth. In addition to this, another hormone, Prolactin, is released during sleep and helps to regulate inflammation. These hormones combined with the increased blood flow are a recipe for recovery. Sleep is key!

[07/14/20]   Hey friends! If you or someone you know is suffering from symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, blurry vision, loss of balance, light headedness or feeling disoriented, then it is likely you may benefit from Vestibular Therapy.

Our nearby locations in Frisco and McKinney have therapists who specialize in vestibular therapy. They are highly knowledgable and have shown to vastly improve their patient's symptoms and therefore their quality of life!

Don't waste another day and talk to your doctor if you are experiencing these symptoms. Let them know you would like to try vestibular therapy at Edge. We are taking new patients and also have private rooms upon request!

Today is the last day of June which is Men's Health Month. We want to encourage all you men on your fitness journeys to try changing up your routine a bit, and get out of the weight room twice a week!

It is extremely beneficial to Cross Train and incorporate different styles of exercise into your routine. Not to mention, it will help bust that gym boredom!

So, aim to incorporate Yoga, Pilates, HIIT, or even cycling into your weight lifting routine a couple times a week. This will help take your fitness to another level and allow your muscles to relax and lengthen (if doing yoga/pilates) and also reduce your risk of injury. #TipTuesday

Patients, family, and friends - as the country is re-opening, the # of active Covid-19 cases are rising. It has been highly suggested to wear masks when in public and when social distancing is not able to be maintained. Let's talk about masks....there are essentially 3 kinds of masks -

the N95 mask (non - surgical)-filters up to 95% of bacterial, viral airborn particles. This mask has a valve to filter incoming air as you inhale. This mask was made to wear in contaminated environments. It ONLY PROTECTS YOU-THE WEARER. As you exhale, the filter opens and you are exhaling your own (potentially) contaminated air into the environment. This mask protects only the wearer, not the other people around you.

The surgical mask - This mask has no filter. It was made to wear in a sterile environment. It protects other people in your environment from the air you exhale. If everyone in your environment is wearing this, some level of protection is offered. If other people are not wearing this, you are not protected.

Cloth, DIY masks - level of protection is untested.

The HIGHEST LEVEL OF PROTECTION - is from a Surgical N95 mask (respirator) which protects both you and the people in your environment.

So, in conclusion - please consider your environment when choosing your mask. Whichever mask you are wearing, please cover your mouth and nose. The mask should be fitted to your face. If your nose is exposed, this will lessen your protection.

Please spread the word. We are required to all wear masks in the clinic. Please wear a surgical mask or a SURGICAL N95 mask (respirator). Thank you.

For today's #TipTuesday we wanted to give you a tip on how you can start each morning if you want to feel refreshed, feel relief from stiffness and joint pain, improve circulation and more.

If you practice yoga, then you have likely heard of the 5 Tibetan Rites. This consists of a sequence of 5 movements done 21 times each. It will allow you to increase mobility as well as flexibility and leave you feeling energized to start your day.

Here is a link that provides some step by step instruction on how to do each movement. If 21 is too many for you, just do what you can according to your ability level.

-Limiting the number of people in the clinic
-Offering TeleHealth

If you are in need of therapy please call us at 469-270-7600 to schedule. Our therapists are happy to discuss any questions or concerns you may have prior to your appointment.

Thank you for the new masks! Donated by a previous patient. We have the best people here!

[05/06/20]   Here is a quick clip of our owner, Shane, showing the measures we are taking to ensure yours as well as our staff's safety during this time of crisis. As we navigate through these tough times, we want you to know that we are here for you.

If there is anything else we can offer to help you feel more comfortable coming to see us, please let us know.

Hey friends! For today's #TipTuesday we want to encourage you all to incorporate this into your diet, if you are not doing so already.

S E L E N I U M:
This element is known to boost your immune system by increasing the effectiveness of white blood cells, which are responsible for warding off infection and VIRUSES. 🦠

We have attached a link to a study done that showed a significant link between selenium status and COVID- 19 cure rate.

By no means are we saying other factors aren't contributing to death rates, however, we do know that incorporating this into your diet will be beneficial to your overall health and during this time of crisis and uncertainty, what more can you ask for?

Let's nourish our bodies and give ourselves the best chance possible to fight this. 💪

Grant doing some clinic repairs during downtime! Grant Thornbrugh

Outside of us helping with your pain, one of our goals at Edge is to have our patients leave our clinics with healthier habits than they had prior to coming to us. Whether that be exercising more often, being more mindful about eating nutritious foods, etc. We want our patients to be health conscious because there is no doubt that that you will experience positive changes as a result.

For today's #TipTuesday we thought we would provide you with some valuable information regarding IMPROVED SLEEP. This information is gathered from Matthew Walker, PhD who we know to be an expert in this field.

Walker’s Tips For Improving Your Sleep:

1. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even after a bad night’s sleep or on the weekend.
2. Keep your bedroom temperature cool; about 65 degrees Fahrenheit is optimal for cooling your body towards sleep. Wear socks if your feet are cold.
3. An hour before bedtime, dim the lights and turn off all screens. Blackout curtains are helpful.
4. If you can’t sleep, get out of bed and do something quiet and relaxing until the urge to sleep returns. Then go back to bed.
5. Avoid caffeine after 1 p.m. and never go to bed tipsy. Alcohol is a sedative and sedation is not sleep. It also blocks your REM dream sleep, an important part of the sleep cycle.

Do any of you currently follow these tips?

A MESSAGE FROM OUR OWNER

We are open because, to many of you, physical therapy is essential! The facts are that the sooner you can address pain, a loss of motion, and weakness the easier it is to get better. If you wait until a situation becomes chronic, it is much more difficult to treat. However, we know that many of you have hesitations about venturing out due to the current pandemic.

We wanted you all to know that EDGE remains open and has taken to the use of strict protocols to honor city/state/federal guidelines and prevent further spread of COVID-19. We are currently doing the following:

*Temperature reading for every employee and patient that enters the building. No one is allowed into treatment area that shows any fever.

*All treating staff and assistive personnel interacting with patients are wearing masks and gloves.

*Equipment is cleaned immediately after each patient use. Our usual standards of cleaning each table and replacing each pillowcase after a patient completes care remains.

*A private treatment room is available upon request and can be reserved.

*One-on-one patient care to limit volume at one time.

*Telehealth is available after initial evaluation.

As physical therapists, our joy comes from working with you all and seeing your pain reduced and your functional levels returning to normal. If you are in pain please get in to see us. We would love to help.

Alright friends, let’s exercise our brain a little. Comment with your answer!

When your schedule is slow and the internet is down. Matt Nguyen

Hey friends! 👋 now that I have your attention with some cute kids, I wanted to provide you with our #TipTuesday !

Since we are all enjoying some TV these days and binge watching our favorite shows, it’s a good idea to give your back a break from the bent forward/ flexed position.

If you just can’t break away from the show, FLIP OVER and lay on your stomach (like the kids in the photo) and continue watching tv in this position! Your back will thank you later.

Social distancing with your coworkers and sweet PPE’s

Thank you Sara Hughes (Justin’s stepmom) for making us these sweet cloth masks! Infection control in style!

A message from our Director, Michelle Pietrowski.

Missing your foam roller!? We got you 😉 Michelle Pietrowski
