In honor of what would have been August David Adler’s 10th birthday, his family donated an Adalyn Rose Foundation Remembrance Cart to the Emergency Department at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital. The cart will help provide comfort, keepsakes, blankets, grief books and support to families facing the heartbreaking loss of a child, ensuring no family grieves alone.

The Adalyn Rose Foundation supports families coping with infant and childhood loss through remembrance carts, bereavement resources, counseling support and financial assistance for therapy and funeral expenses. Their mission is to bring comfort and care to families during their most difficult moments.

When it comes to gift giving, think of things you can do with your children that encourage parent and child bonding. Because of how much time kids spend on screens, gifts that promote face-to-face interaction and encourage you to spend time together as a family are a great gift.

Bikes and scooters are great gifts for kids. However, remember to include a helmet with these gifts because unless the child gets it right away, odds are it’s going to be harder to get them to put the helmet on later. But by giving a helmet with the bike or scooter, you’re teaching the child to associate the two together – I don’t ride my bike without my helmet.

When it comes to keeping kids safe this holiday season, how you present the gift matters. Plastic holiday gift bags that many people resort to are actually a suffocation risk for young children. So, while it can be easier to put gifts in holiday bags, if you’re giving a gift for a child under 3, opt instead to wrap the presents.

Are you a parent or caregiver of a neurodivergent child looking for a support community?

At LVHN, part of Jefferson Health, you don’t have to navigate your journey on your own. You are invited to join our Parent/Caregiver of Neurodivergent Children support group.

“This support group celebrates the individuality of every child while offering parents and caregivers a circle of empathy, resources and encouragement,” says Jillian Ralph, pediatric occupational therapist with Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital.

Parents and caregivers of children with suspected or diagnosed conditions such as autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, developmental delay or intellectual disabilities are welcome to join. Sessions are held bimonthly – on the first Monday (virtually) and third Monday (in person) of every month.

If a toy has the ASTM F963 mark, it has been rigorously tested by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and met its comprehensive safety standards. This mark assures the toy is free from specific hazards, including excessive lead and heavy metals, dangerous phthalates and sharp edges or points. It also ensures compliance with safety requirements for flammability, small parts, electrical components and even sound output to protect a child’s hearing.

Toys with rare earth (neodymium) magnets or button batteries should not be purchased and/or should be thoroughly examined for safety before being given to a child. If more than one magnet is ingested, the magnets could attach inside a child’s body, causing serious injury. Button batteries can also lead to severe internal burns, injury or worse if a child who ingests a button battery doesn’t receive care immediately.
